WPA v BIG Melee 2013

WPA versus BIG League

Sunday 9th June saw the Rising Sun host the first WPA v BIG League Challenge cup, in beautiful bouling weather conditions.

After bacon rolls off the BBQ games got promptly underway.

The BIG was represented by players from the Rising Sun, Wheatsheaf, Machen Legionnaires, PILCS, Abergavenny and Caerleon RFC.

The WPA was represented by players from Penarth, Monkstone Pen- y-Lan and Wenvoe.

After the morning session the WPA had just forged ahead 14 –10 but with 24 games to come there was still every thing to play for. Players participated in a BBQ lunch, chicken, hotdogs, burgers, salad and a cool drink from the bar before starting the next round.

Not only did the day get hotter the games became tenser. The 4th round saw BIG cut the WPA lead to 2 points (17-15)

The 5th round saw the WPA regain their lead to 4 points (22-18) with one round to go it was still all to play for, the first two results came in as BIG wins cutting the lead back to 2 points (22-20) then in came a WPA win (23-20), BIG then recorded another win (23-21) back to 2 points with 4 results to come in, It was nip and tuck throughout the rest the games with the last game watched by every one where Barbara Vaughan and Wally Wilkinson (Caerleon RFC) came back from 10 –2 down against Bernard and Vicky Adshead  Peny-y-Lan Monkstone then just losing out 13-11a really good game which everyone thoroughly enjoyed applauding every point and shot. The WPA recorded the final 4 game as wins, making the final result:

W.P.A 27 B.I.G 21

Although the WPA were victorious with 27 wins against the BIG 21the points difference was very close:

W.P.A  F 474  A 460  D +14

B.I.G    F 460  A 474  D -14

Showing how close the competition was.

On to the presentation which started off with a mention of the only Fanny of the day, Sam and Carol from Rising Sun., Sam also winning a handbag in the raffle to go with his fanny.

Trophies were awarded to the top pair of both of the associations:

B.I.G    5 wins out of 6, Steve Morgan & Roger Pipe

W.P.A  5 wins out of 6 Judith Smith & Brian Dryer.

Well done to both pairs.

The WPA lifted the first ever WPA v BIG Challenge Cup making it a perfect ending to the day.

It fact it was such a great day that some players stayed on to play a few more ends just for fun.

Hopefully next year we will do it all again at a WPA venue where I’m sure the BIG League will be out to get revenge and bring the trophy back to the B.I.G Clubs.

A big thanks to the Rising Sun for their hospitality and hosting the event, Roger and Shaun for organising the pistes, Sylvia & Co for organising the food.
