The Eyes Have It!!
29 May 2017

Speaker at the meeting of 29th May was club member Eric Govan, who gave a most interesting update on changes and progress in his profession of optometry - assisted by a visual! aid in the form of a large model of an eye.

Comparison was made between earlier equipment of ophthalmoscope, retina scope and trial frames - and today’s instrument room full of complex equipment, capable of advanced diagnostics, measurements and recording photography. Eric especially  mentioned modern, accurate tests for peripheral vision - an important factor in determining driving safety.

It was reassuring to hear that regular eye examinations, as a part of routine eye care do much more than check for a new pair of spectacles. Serious conditions such as diabetis, glaucoma and even brain tumours can be diagnosed too.

We heard also of improvements in materials and manufacturing processes that have succeeded in making contact lenses more effective, safer to use and much less expensive than was the case not too many years ago.

Eric ended his talk with a quiz that tested the audience’s knowledge of facts about  eye healthcare - as well as some common misconceptions.

A very interesting and broad ranging talk and one that prompted many questions, following which an appreciative vote of thanks was proposed by Eric Dewhirst.
