East Neuk Preservation
17 September 2012

Guest speaker on 17th September was Dr Jim Carstairs, Chairman of the East Neuk of Fife Preservation society. Dr Carstairs gave a most interesting talk about the history of the society and its work. Founded in 1961 and now with 300 members, the Society aims to stimulate pride in the local architecture and historic character of the East Neuk, and to act as a custodian of its unique character and rich architectural heritage.

We heard of the early years of the society when many ambitious plans were put in place – often purchasing properties in order to protect and restore them. Mention was made of  the success of work in the 1960’s to save the then derelict Gyles at Pittenweem harbour, when demolition was proposed.

The history of other now-iconic structures was discussed, for example Wood’s Tower, the last remnant of a castle built by 15th century Admiral Wood, of St Monans Salt Pans and windmill, of the unique milestones and waymarkers of the area and of course of the many doocots.

Dr Carstairs concluded by commenting that in his view the society’s greatest achievement over the 51 years has been to change attitudes. From a time when many historically important buildings might simply be demolished, there is now an appreciation of the value and importance of our heritage, with great care being taken to preserve and restore.

He also commented on current concerns over the construction of wind turbines and of the care needed in deciding on location.

A vote of thanks was proposed, on behalf of an appreciative audience, by Ian McBain. More about the preservation society may be found at (http://www.eastneukpreservationsociety.co.uk)
