BEACH CLEAN
24 June 2023

Saturday 24th June saw local Rotary club members and helpers out cleaning beaches at Anstruther, Crail, Elie and Pittenweem. After some black clouds in the morning, rain stayed away and we were blessed with a hot and sunny afternoon - and with a tide that was safely out!  A huge thank you to everyone.

A number of bags were filled with rubbish - and one dead gannet. At Castle Street beach in Anstruther the volunteers were met by the Fife Coastal Path ranger, who cleans the beach every day - It meant the beach was virtually litter free. Bags from all the beaches were later most efficiently disposed of by the Fife Coast and Countryside Trust. Grateful thanks to them.

Interestingly we found that that there was very little litter dropped by visitors to the beaches - most was debris washed in by the tide. Small pieces of various kinds of old and degraded plastics being especially in evidence.

In such beautiful East Neuk scenery it was very encouraging that visitors to the beaches are being responsible and careful - but with a niggling worry that we must equally look after our seas, by disposing of waste thoughtfully.
