Wood Finishes

A range of Wood oils, Varnishes, Abrasives, Adhesives and brushes.

Oils

Wood oils are a traditional finishing method, they are natural products and enhance the figure of the wood while giving a natural look.

Tung Oil

A vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii) This oil is hardwearing and waterproof, it is applied with a brush or cloth, to get deeper penetration of the grain thin the first coat 50:50 with thinners. apply one coat per day and four or five coats are recommended. this finish is matt although enough coats will start to give a sheen. Tung oil darkens the wood to about the shade of wet wood, it is not recommended for very pale timbers.

Food safe and non alergic, the polymerising effect can cause btightly bundled cloths to heat up and catch fire, only really a thing on the industrial scale but just to be on the safe side lay the cloths flat to dry.

Linseed Oil

paler than Tung oil and less durable, Pure Linseed oil is slow to dry while boiled linseed oil will dry quicker and should be more hardwearing.

Finishing Oil

A blend of Tung oil, Linseed oil and varnishes, also called Danish oil. This is ideal for furniture projects as the oils bring out the beauty of the wood while the resins give a wipe clean hardwearing finish, Best for meduim to dark woods, use Lacquer on the white woods.

Food safe finish

this is mineral oil, it is clear and has little effect on the colour of the wood, while bringing out the grain, mineral oil is mostly used of cooking utensils and guitar fretboards, it is non drying and may need re applied occasionally.

Lemon Oil

a blend of Mineral oil and lemongrass oil, nothing to do with actual lemons but very strongly scented of lemon, ideal for boxes where the smell will linger when opened.
