Few pitmen kept diaries or memoirs which might relate to Billy’s local images, but one such does exist for the Derwent Valley colliery village of Hamsterley. Joe Graham’s memories (documents/justkeepbreathing.pdf) of the colliery village of Hamsterley from 1904 describe some of the scenes Billy Costello was capturing with his camera at the time. Most notably perhaps with the Posstick Mill and The Chelmsford Hotel at Ebchester.
