MEDICAL FACILITIES

These are available in all large centres. They include up-to-date Government hospitals for which a charge of 16s. per day is made. There is an up-to-date hospital on each copper mine. X-ray and radiography are available, as are dental and eye specialists. Maternity and pre-natal clinics are run in the large centres

Vaccination and Inoculation

It is advisable, but not compulsory, for travellers arriving in Northern Rhodesia to be in possession of a valid smallpox vaccination certificate, the period of validity being three years from vaccination. The laws of the Territory require unvaccinated persons to be vaccinated within two months of entry. Revaccination may be required in the event of a threatened outbreak of smallpox in any area. A vaccination certificate in possession of travellers is therefore a safeguard against inconvenience.

Investigations have shown that yellow fever is only endemic to the Barotse Province and the Balovale District of the Western Province. Persons travelling to these areas should therefore be in possession of valid certificates of inoculation against this disease. Inoculations must be performed at least ten days before

the traveller expects to leave the area. It is not entirely necessary for the certificate to be valid at the time of entry in the endemic areas. A yellow fever inoculation is not effective for more than four years. As most tourists entering Northern Rhodesia from the north have travelled, whether by air or by road, through endemic areas, it is recommended that all such visitors have in their possession a valid yellow fever inoculation certificate.
