AMENITIES, SPORTS AND
AMUSEMENTS
Amusements. There are ten commercial cinemas in the larger towns along the railway line, with occasional showings in the clubs at other centres. The cost for a seat is approximately 3s. 6d.
Sports. There are facilities for sports in all towns. Tennis, golf, rugby, soccer, bowls and hockey are the main ones. There are swimming baths at Livingstone, Lusaka, Ndola, Broken Hill, Kasama, and all four Copperbelt towns. There are clubs in all the large towns and at many smaller centres. Lusaka has a Turf Club, and Polo Clubs are in existence at both Lusaka and Nkana.

Agricultural Shows. Held annually at Lusaka and Fort Jameson. Smaller shows are held each year in some rural areas.
Libraries. There are libraries in all large towns. Some residents belong to book societies.
Amateur Dramatics. Most towns have amateur dramatic societies which put on plays regularly, and the price of seats varies from 3s-. 6d. to 6s.
Churches. There are churches of all denominations in all the large towns.
Societies. In all large towns there are Masonic Lodges and R.A.O.B. Halls as well as Women's Institutes, Caledonian, etc., Societies.
Clubs. In addition to the sports clubs mentioned above, most large towns have a number of cultural clubs such as those connected with music, photography, philately, etc.

A widely read paper in Northern Rhodesia is The Chronicle, published daily in Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia (P.O. Box 585, Bulawayo). Newsagents in the larger towns stock copies of several popular United Kingdom and South African daily newspapers, as well as a good range of illustrated periodicals from overseas.
