Volume 1 Part 2 now complete

These text files :-

nrj_1_2_74-75_correspondence.txt
nrj_1_2_76-79_notes.txt
nrj_1_2_80-81_book_review.txt
nrj_1_2_index.txt

have now been uploaded to
http://www.spanglefish.com/northernrhodesiajournal/library.asp

That completes Volume 1 Number 2

In all candour, while these are interesting, even fascinating, to
read, they are all available already as IMAGE files at
http://www.nrzam.org.uk/#NRJ

The main (sole?) purpose of this WebSite is to make these historical
articles available as TEXT files, and therefore able to be found by
Google, etc. - though it may take a while before Google finds them;
however, it has found the Index already.

e.g.
In the Index is the line of text
"English Village memorials to Northern Rhodesia pioneers"
and if you shove that into Google, it comes up with three hits:-

... which is all I hoped for when I started this endeavour.

Hooray !

But having tried this experiment, I have now changed the WebSite name
(but not the address) so that it  will display thus:-

etc.

You may get some wry amusement, if, from today's perspective, you look
at the Notes file just posted, and read this:-

-------------------------------------------------
GEOGRAPHICAL NAMES.
In an article in this number, we describe the origin of a number of
English names of geographical features. In a later number we shall be
dealing with similar names that are no longer is use, either because
the place has been abandoned or because the name has been changed. In
the pioneering days, the discoverer of a waterfall or a mountain
usually named it, published his discovery and the name stuck. Recently
we have had a mild dispute concerning the discovery of some big falls
in the Kafue Gorge. The two hardy missionaries who went through the
Gorge on foot in 1949 claim to be the first men to do so and they
named the falls the Wesley Falls. A discussion on their claim will
appear in a later number, and if it is not proved that they were the
first to see the Falls then there may be a demand to change the name.
But who is to do it ? It seems to us that there is a case for some
existing body to undertake the work of a Geographical Names Committee.
We hesitate to suggest an entirely new committee, as there would be so
little work to do, but perhaps the Commission for the Preservation of
Natural and Historical Monuments and Relics could combine this duty
with its existing work.

With the growth of a large European population it may be that many
natural features with native names will in time get anglicised names.

We have seen how, at Kitwe, streets originally given native names have
had them changed to European names because of the difficulty Europeans
had in pronouncing native words. The same may easily occur in
connection with the more popular natural features. Many native names
have a beauty of sound that it would be a pity to lose, but pressure
of European opinion might force the change, and it would be reasonable
for some authoritative body to see that any change had, at least, a
significance.
