January 2014

First thing I’m off to view a local car today with James, a 1.6 5 door on a 51 plate, from what old work colleagues have said (ex ford) it may have leather interior, A/C, heated front screen, ABS, Electric bits and bobs. The car is a non runner. The small end bearing have gone and they are looking for £250 for it. Don’t know about mot or tax but that is something that can be looked at a later date.

Images of the car im off to see.

Well I bought it. £50 paid a deposit and I’m off to pick it up tomorrow night.

It's not the prettiest car when you look closely but it is tidy. o/s sill has been replaced at some point in the past, can see the weld marks all along. Both wheel arches are in need of a little attention. Underneath the back end looks good, chassis legs have surface rust but nothing to worry about. Inside it has got tan leather with matching door cards. The front n/s has got a damaged speaker cover.

The engine is knackered. It has a definate knock, from the top end I think. We are towing back about 10 miles so hopefully the engine will tick over without too much damage to give be better brakes and power steering. Might think about listening to which piston has gone and take out the spark and injector from that piston and let it run lumpy.

I don't know about heated screen, A/C, ABS etc I was more worried about the body. It's tax and tested so i can get my insurance sorted to get it home.

Bought

I bought a set of front st170 calipers off eBay last night for £41 with discs (will get new ones) need to pay for carriage. Sav has me giving me all the pointers I need to make them fit. I'll look for braided hoses once I have put the calipers on the front and back (not bought yet) i need to make sure that all the holes are the right size and thread before I fork out £70.

I fitted Granda calipers and Volvo disks onto the sierra xr4x4 so this fiesta should be easy to get the right parts.

Collected the car this evening.. phew.

Knowing the car already had a engine fault and I’m changing it anyway I drove it back on 3 cylinders, stinky cat, no power at low revs and what water was there at the start of the 10 mile journey there was  very little water after... I’ve taken more pictures of the car and the bits that need doing. Usually body round the wheel arches, a little below the n/s rear lamp. Touch ups here and there and a patch to do on the n/s rear door.

The cars got A/C and heated screen as well as the wood 6 CD changer, electric front windows and boot popper. The main beam switch is a bit sensitive which is common.
Best bit for the money I paid tax till 10/14, 4 brand new tyres in October. Not worried about MOT as it will probably run out by the time I’m done.

Hopefully i can get a pressure washer this week and really clean down the engine bay before labeling everything up and taking it off.

Tried the 6 CD radio today, does not work correctly and now has the discs stuck inside. Was hoping it would work to make a few extra quid but no. Better take it to work today to get the CDs out and bin it. I also took apart the heater facia as I‘m not liking the wood. Not sure how to make this work as I’d like to sticker it so I’ll try sanding down the front but I think it has a clear plastic coat with the wood and decals underneath.

Finally got an email back from eBay about the st170 calipers apparently someone has nicked the calipers? So I’m getting a refund on the cost of the parts, probably wanted more than £41 for them.

Found a few rust patches that need to be seen to:

Driver’s sill top, Drivers A pillar, Both rear wheel arches, Below rear passenger lamp, Passenger rear door on the front edge.

Going to investigate further this weekend with the use of a power tool.

I have been playing with the heater control panel, not keen on the wood. I’ve got a idea for it but I’m going to see how it pans out before I put it on here.

Started to strip the engine bay down, so far I have removed the: upper air filter, inlet pipe with the throttle body and potentiometer, Coil pack and leads, most of the water pipes, except the thermostat housing is really tight access for the 1 bolt (still need to do) due to the air con pipe. Alternator is off which is easier than a 1.25 as there 1 less bolt on the 1.6

Unplugged and marked up a few of the sensor leads.

Removed 2 of the wheels and put on my wife’s old Xsara steels so I can sell the alloys to make a few quid.
