the Fairfax Jewel

Seaton Delaval Hall were good enough to display the Fairfax (Naseby) Jewel for us.

An interesting point arises from that. It was presented to the Commons by Sir Robert Harley, and it was presented to Fairfax by John Ashe, the MP for Westbury. Now Sir Robert Harley was one of those excluded at Pride's Purge; John Ashe, although friends with Cromwell, nevertheless refused to have anything to do with the King's Trial. In the book, we have discussed that Fairfax, far from being isolated in his opposition to the King's Trial, was in fact part of an identifiable group who shared his point of view. The Jewel has provided us with two more members of that group.
