
After the shock of the explosion at Torrington Church, the New Model marched over this bridge towards Holsworthy. The roads, of course, were not paved, and the rain and sleet would have turned them into a quagmire.

Blisland's Norman Church and village green, much as the New Model might have seen it. The very steep and narrow roads between here and Bodmin would have made navigation very difficult. It is hard to imagine how Fairfax could have moved his army with such speed, if he did not enjoy local help.
