Kirby Hall, showing the original 3 gables. The roofing contains ships' timbers, a hint of Sir Francis Vere's past exploits. The account of my visit there is in the Fairfax Society's magazine. Tilbury Hall. Horatio was Baron of Tilbury-juxta-Clare. Both houses stand in the grounds of Hedingham Castle, the ancestral home of the Earls of Oxford.

 

 

 

 

 

The 'Fairfax Oak' a survivor of the original Essex Forest, but everyone in Castle Hedingham will tell you that Fairfax sat underneath this tree to plan the siege of Colchester.
