STONE & BRICK WORK

A straight section of garden wall with a pier at each end and one in the middle.

Select bricks and choose bond. Dig out trench for foundation and fill bottom with fairly dry concrete. Ensure that the surface is level and flat. When dry, mix mortar and leave on a spot board. Lines in and remember that the first course of bricks sets the main idea for the rest of the job. Lay at least 3 courses and then a damp course. After laying several courses , drop back and point in the mortar. Remember the bond and avoid joints above each other. Use the level as often as possible to keep the wall level on each course and straight as you go. The higher you build the more you may need to use the plumbline.

There may be a need for a cap stone on the piers and a soldier course to complete the wall. After completing the pointing, brush off the whole wall with a sft hand brush.
