Statistical Accounts

There have been three Statistical Accounts recorded for Fort Augustus which give a facinating glimpse into the history of the village.  The first between the years of 1790 and 98 was taken just a generation after Culloden when the area had been decimated by the Duke of Cumberland.  The second in 1831, on the eve of the visit to Edinburgh by King George IV and when Sir Walter Scott was changing the popular view of the Highlands. And the third was in the lifetime of many of us, between 1953 and 64, when the Forestry Commission and Hydro-Board were welcome employers.  The Statistical Accounts document almost 170 years of change in Fort Augustus.
