I guess I am just a number.
11 June 2015

I arrived at the Charles St Jobcentre in Cardiff a few minutes early for my fortnightly signing and was called roughly five minutes late. I decided to go along with the electronic signing after asking a few questions but I wasn't being given any clear answers to my questions regarding whether it was compulsory or not. It probably isn't yet compulsory but I used the pen on the pad to scribble half a dozen signatures and it did recognise my signature when the time came for me to sign to get my JSA. During the fortnight I had a job interview in Barry and it was a surprise to me. It was a saturday morning and I decided to apply for a basic admin job I had found on UJM. I emailed my CV and on the monday I received an email back from a company called 365 Security inviting me to attend the next day on tuesday at 1pm. I emailed back confirming that I would attend and would you believe it Barry is classified as in my local jobsearch area and so I ended up paying a total of five pound for the sake of an interview. I arrived a few minutes before 1pm and found myself in a long queue of people who had all been given the same time to attend. I was eventually interviewed a few minutes before 3pm. During the interview it was clear that they wanted a couple of people to do admin for them but also to inform clients on the phone of the services that they offer. I was told that they would keep my CV on file for six months. This company has been in operation for around a year and have advertised a few vacancies online for various occupations. The excuse for the long wait was that not everyone confirmed that they would attend but that is a ridiculous excuse because if everyone had confirmed then they would have to contact them all again to arrange different times or just allow them to wait as we did. It was clear that they were inviting everyone who applied in the hope that most would agree to allow them to keep their CVs on file. This would allow the company to go to big employers and offer their services for recruitment purposes and use people like myself as numbers who they wouldn't probably ever send to any employer. If they want to break into the recruitment business then they are going to have to show employers that they have a good client base even if they wouldn't employ many of them in reality. At least I'm useful for something but it still means that I had to waste five pound and I guess the same applies to many others. If they had just wanted a couple of admin assistants then a little bit of time and effort and they could have interviewed people who would be more suitable without wasting our time. At the time I had seven pound to last me the week for food and I ended up spending five pounds to increase the client base for them.
