I wonder what they have in store for me next.
28 November 2014

The date on the “Notification of Appointment” letter for my appointment at the Jobcentre was upon me so off I went to the Charles St Jobcentre in Cardiff with all the required documents in hand. I was called a few minutes earlier than my appointment time by the lady who saw me when I had to sign up for the Claimant Commitment that replaced my Jobseekers Agreement some months ago. She was very polite and asked me first for my bank statement. I gave her the front copy showing the balance and she insisted on seeing the transaction details. I suggested that as the balance showed the only money put in my account was my JSA and the amount in credit was very small that she shouldn't need any further information. She insisted that she must have the transaction details so after I stated that it was just for snooping purposes I handed her my transaction details. She then asked me if I had any other accounts and I told her that I did and it had a balance of just £3. She didn't ask for that statement although I did have it in my pocket in case she insisted on seeing it. I then gave her a copy of my phone bill that showed my name and address and she looked at my jobsearch on my UJM account that I had made available before I went to the Jobcentre by ticking the box to allow them access. She then asked me if I had gone to the Shaw Trust as she had suggested months ago as they might be able to help me in my efforts to find work. I said that I had not but would think about it as it was supposed to only be voluntary. I was then informed that as Universal Credit is coming in I will have to do 35 hours jobsearch from next year. It appears that instead of just doing jobsearch the unemployed will be doing things such as planning how to get to an interview just in case they are offered a place. I was told of a website where you put in the details of where you are intending to go and it tells you how to get there in terms of by bus, train, car etc. I was aware of that website and the thought of planning to get to a place just in case I am offered an interview doesn't appeal to me but it will become part of the 35 hours of required efforts next year. The lady made a few suggestions regarding my Work Plan booklet and then took photocopies of my bank statement/transactions, phone bill and then I was allowed to go. I guess someone has had a good long look at my bank transactions, it appears that the unemployed have no privacy rights anymore. It looks like Jobcentreplus are going to make a lot of house calls on people requesting the information that I handed over to them and anyone unemployed could get caught out looking for the documents while the Jobcentreplus person has a good look around their home. I only say this as a number of websites have mentioned these house calls so even more of our privacy taken away from us. When I got home I realised that I didn't have a copy of the “Notification of Appointment” letter that I had to sign on the back. After all I had answered the ten questions and if someone makes any alterations to my answers I won't have a copy to show that it had been tampered with. In future I will ask for a copy of any letter that I put my signature to.
