I'm unemployed so I guess I have all day. 23 October 2014 I walked to the Charles St Jobcentre in Cardiff for my fortnightly signing in a calm and quite contented manner. It was just spotting with rain and as I entered the Jobcentre I immediately walked between the two security guards at the entrance and sat down opposite the two women who usually sign me. Most of the desks were occupied and while I was waiting I heard one of the women inform a claimant that he has not shown enough jobsearch. She allowed him to go over to the computers and open up his email account and provide evidence of email. They eventually both went over and of course eventually came back. I guess they must have installed the computers now as I didn't even bother to look on my way in or out. A middle aged guy who was clearly a member of staff, well he had an identification tag on, strolled over to a female member of staff at a desk nearby and sat talking to her for about fifteen minutes. Then he left and went over to the other side of the room while I sat waiting for my name to be called. A man sat down next to me and later he told me that his signing time was fifteen minutes earlier. He decided to go up to the two women at the desks we were sitting opposite and ask and eventually we were both called. I had arrived five minutes early and I was now being seen over half an hour after my official signing time. The first thing the woman did was give me a copy of a Claimant Commitment agreement dated 31st July which it appears I hadn't signed the first time. That suggests that two weeks ago when a young guy signed me for the first time and put my file on a pile of others, he must have had a good look and found the unsigned form. The woman allowed me to sign and also signed my Work Plan booklet. She also suggested that I reduce my skills base to avoid the search coming up with jobs that I wasn't skilled for. I stated that it also comes up with jobs in Bristol and other parts of the West Country but she said that as they officially are inside the governments guidelines that I should apply for them. Up to now I have been sensible in the jobs that I apply for, I applied for twelve jobs this fortnight and thirteen the previous fortnight but I am seriously considering applying for all the West Country jobs that I am capable of doing and obtaining a high job application total. In reality no sensible employer would take on someone living in Cardiff for the minimum wage for a job in Bristol or Gloucester who is reliant on public transport. Sometimes government guidelines make us do silly things just to avoid a sanction. On my way out I noticed that I was leaving the Jobcentre a full hour after entering. This was supposed to be just a signing day. I don't believe the Jobcentre are short staffed, to me it's more a case of staff not wanting to help others when a backlog occurs. Most employers would expect their staff to help each other when it's busy but when it's government money paying the wages that rarely happens. | ![]() ![]() ![]() |
