Where have all the unemployed gone?
05 June 2014

I went along to the Charles St Jobcentre in Cardiff to attend for my fortnightly signing and when I arrived two security guards were standing just inside the entrance. I just showed my signing card and walked in. They could have been cardboard cut outs as I didn't detect any movement from either of them apart from a smile. I sat down opposite the desk that I am usually called to and waited. I was about five minutes early and it was roughly only a few minutes after my signing time that I was called. During the time I was waiting two names were called but no one went to the desks. The job points appeared to have been removed and I asked the lady who was signing me and she said that they are putting in some fast wi-fi system and other job points. I guess for now the unemployed will have to use the library if they don't have internet access at home. It appears that people will be able to bring along their laptops and other devices and connect up. This government must think that the unemployed have all the modern gadgets but I only have a desktop computer that I bought in 2001 and still use windows98. It works really well except for some websites that don't allow old browsers to access them. I only mention this as recently I tried to get on the Cardiff Council website that I visit on a regular basis and this week it wouldn't allow me on the site. It appears that my browser is too old and I should upgrade but as I don't have a modern operating system I can't upgrade my browser. I don't know why Cardiff Council went from a good website that any computer could access to one that the poor who have old computer systems are now barred from. Unless I can find a way round it I will have to go to a library if I want to apply for a council vacancy. Maybe I will go to a computer shop and see if I can buy a second hand operating system such as XP and that would allow me to at least upgrade my browsers. The lady who signed me today wasn't at her desk two weeks ago and after spending a couple of minutes looking at my UJM account I was allowed to go. She did tell me that a Jobsfair is being held at the City Hall next wednesday.(11th June) Very few unemployed people were on the ground floor today but I suppose if they knew about the job point situation then only people signing and making an enquiry would be in attendance.
