They listen but they don't care
13 September 2013
As soon as I got home today I checked to see if anyone had called my landline phone while I was out. It was making a bleep sound suggesting that someone had left me a message. I pressed 1471 and was informed that the caller had withheld their number. I then pressed 1571 and listened to the message that was from my personal advisor at Charles St Jobcentre in Cardiff. She gave me details of an interview I have at Alexandra House Jobcentre on Thursday 19th September regarding Royal Mail christmas jobs. She told me to download an application form and complete it but when I went on the Royal Mail website no application form link was found. Of course Angard Staffing do the recruitment for the Royal Mail so as this was a bit confusing I decided to phone my advisor at Charles St Jobcentre. That was around 3pm today and she wasn't in the office so the lady taking my call asked me for my national insurance number and name and then advised me to download the application form. I told her that I could not find it on the Royal Mail website, she told me that many had applied so in effect it must be on the site. After a little pause she said she would leave a message for my advisor to call me on monday. Maybe she couldn't find the application form link either. Yesterday during my appointment with my advisor I told her that I was going to apply for the Royal Mail christmas vacancies but noticed that they offer zero hour contracts that I'm not happy about. She appeared to agree with me regarding zero hour contracts but it seems she put my name forward anyway and somehow got me an interview next thursday. I will be interested to find out what she says on monday. Alexandra House I guess is approximately a forty five minute walk from where I live so a nice round trip of ninety minutes walking next thursday should burn off approximately 350 to 400 calories. I like to look on the bright side and if the interview goes ahead I will certainly be mentioning zero hour contracts and will be interested in the response I receive. I noticed that the link from UJM to Angard Staffing for people applying via the government website asks you to provide a checkable five year history and two referees. As I don't have any kind of criminal record I will pass any check but I did see a list of offences that won't allow a person to obtain a job with Royal Mail. Theft is the obvious one and drug offences were also mentioned. Offences against the Royal Mail was also on the list. I wish personal advisors would listen to the unemployed claimants they are supposed to be helping rather than just provide lip service. My advisor knew full well that I was opposed to zero hour contracts so she puts me forward for a zero hour job. It's very odd to get an interview before an application form has been completed which suggests that my CV was sent to Angard Staffing since I spoke to my advisor yesterday and they informed her to get me to complete an application form and take it along next week. That shows what happens when you allow people to send off your CV to any employer without informing you first. Although I have not ticked the box allowing my advisor to look on my UJM account I have a feeling they look anyway and in time I will be proven right.
