I want to work for you and I don't even know who you are
08 September 2013

Everyone who is unemployed and has had to use Universal Jobmatch is aware that most of the jobs on offer where the employer is Company Confidential are bogus or are jobs that have been advertised some time ago and have just been put back on with different reference numbers but are not actually now available. Of course a percentage of those jobs are genuine and are worth applying for. When you are allowed to apply for a job using Universal Jobmatch you would first click on the red apply button and it would usually take you to a page where you can select the CV you had previously uploaded and then you click on another button and it is done. You could then look at your application history and see the job title and the word received next to it suggesting that the employer has received your CV. If the employer looks at your CV then the word “received” becomes “viewed”. Most of the jobs on UJM leave you having to use your own email account to send your CV to an employer and then you have to go back into your UJM account and enter the details onto your activity history. On Saturday I applied for a job on UJM for a warehouse operative and although I had no experience of warehouse work it did look like a job that required little training. The job was being advertised by Company Confidential but I still applied for it. I clicked on the red apply button and instead of being taken to the page where I would be able to select my CV it took me to another page headed “Universal Jobmatch”. On this page I had to type my name, email address and contact phone number. I then clicked on the browse button to attach my CV and it took me to my own computer to upload a CV instead of selecting one from the UJM website that I had uploaded when I first signed up to UJM. I then typed in a cover letter that in the past it wasn't possible to do on UJM. After pressing another button to send the information it stated on screen “Awaiting Processing”. I have no idea who the employer is supposed to be and it didn't show in my application history so I thought it must have been sent to the employer. After logging in a few times since to UJM it still has not been shown on my application history but when I click on the job that I applied for the red apply button is grey. This usually signifies that the person has applied for the job and that leaves me to believe that someone on UJM is going to process my application before it is sent on to an employer or it is just a test to see if people are applying for jobs genuinely. When you look at a job and the apply button is grey and not red that informs you that you have previously applied for that job so why doesn't this job vacancy appear on my application history. It really looks like someone on Monday morning is going to process my application. I hope that is the case because I don't want it to be an attempt to find an excuse for giving someone a sanction. Although I have no faith in jobs advertised under the company confidential name I still apply for all jobs in a sensible way but some people might make silly comments because they feel it isn't a real job and that could be used to sanction them. What I am saying is, make sure that all jobs you apply for are done in a sensible way and don't give anyone the chance to question your efforts even if you think the job isn't a real one. It could easily be just another trick to sanction people. I do think it is wrong that many of us apply for jobs not knowing who the employer is. The good thing for me is that my application for the job was okay and my cover letter was a solid effort reflecting on the fact that although I lacked the experience I am a quick learner and of course I included the basics such as hardworking, honest and such things as having an excellent attendance record. I can just imagine someone who is tired of applying for non existent jobs putting some silly comments down and that is never wise especially when it can be kept for lengthy periods online. In fact of the last 50 jobs that I have applied for using UJM my CV has only been viewed on three occasions. I can fully understand why some people take the vacancies advertised by Company Confidential or CV Warehouse with a pinch of salt. Today which is a Sunday over 230 jobs have supposedly been posted on UJM for Cardiff. Yes, you have guessed right, a significant number of those jobs are from Company Confidential and CV Warehouse. .
