Could happen to any of us. 28 July 2013
Although this website is mainly reporting on my experiences on the Work Programme with Working Links and now my experiences on the Post Work Programme with Jobcentreplus, I came across an article on a newspaper website that is a warning to us all. It relates to a man in Scotland who was told to apply for three jobs a week. He went along for his fortnightly signing with his six jobs applied for during the fortnight and had his benefit stopped. It appears that he had applied for two jobs one week and four the next so didn't actually apply for three jobs a week. Any decent person would have had a quiet word with him and advised him to make sure he has three applications done each week but on this occasion that didn't happen. He went to the press and they printed his story. The one thing that I don't understand is how they stopped his benefits without giving him the chance first to explain. The article says that the first he knew about anything being wrong was when he went to the cashpoint to get some money. I would have thought a decision maker would have first contacted him to ask for his side. It just shows that you can't just take the fortnight as a whole to meet your expected targets but clearly it's another bit of proof that the Jobcentre do have targets and it's also likely that they look for easy targets. At least the guy in Scotland will hopefully get his benefit entitlement back soon but in the meantime he will have rent arrears and all the stress that goes with it.
