Only a couple of months before my 2 years are up on the Work Programme
10 April 2013

I was looking at a few websites for any information regarding what happens to people after they complete two years on the Work Programme and found some information on so called trailblazers. The idea as far as I can gather is that after two years the participants who are still unemployed will have their national insurance numbers put on a spreadsheet and will then randomly be put into three groups. So whatever your age or background you could end up having to complete so many months work experience or be called in for more help at the Jobcentre or go into the third group and be given additional help that they deem you require. I'm not quite sure regarding the third group whether it is for education such as maths and writing skills or further training. The group heading for the Jobcentre might be for much more enhanced job applications which on reflection might be the better group to be assigned to. They say that the groups will be randomly selected so can't be changed but I wouldn't put it past Jobcentre staff to deliberately make people they don't like go on the work experience group. I did notice that it said that no one will be made to work more hours on the work experience than the hours they agreed to work on their jobseekers allowance agreement but as that usually means at least 30 hours a week I guess we are looking at working for nothing for 30 hours a week. Let's hope that these so called trailblazers that were supposed to be tried out at certain parts of the UK are not successful but more than likely a spin will be put on the results to make it compulsory. As I will be one of the first to complete two years on the Work Programme sometime during june 2013 I will be able to inform you of what happens to me and hopefully all this talk of putting our national insurance numbers on a spreadsheet and putting us in three random lists will prove to be false but I was looking at a government website.
