Experience of using Universal Jobmatch
16 January 2013
The woman who saw me on monday at the Jobcentre for the first time, my new personal advisor made a few statements that were probably made just to push me towards registering on Universal Jobmatch. As I registered and now have some experience of the website I can now give my comments based on actual experience. The woman told me that if I didn't register then I would have to provide hard copy of my job applications and suggested obtaining copies of my emails by going to an enterprise centre as I don't have a printer. The reality is that if you apply for jobs through Universal Jobmatch that require email applications that website doesn't record that you have applied for any jobs so only the notes you leave are any kind of proof. Therefore why aren't the people who apply through Universal Jobmatch made to provide hard copy. Only jobs that allow the website to send you directly to another website will leave any record that you have applied. That means the website is inferior to many other sites such as Totaljobs who allow you to send your application immediately rather than in the monster site where you still have to close down Universal Jobmatch and go to your own email program. The monster site does allow you to upload up to five CV's and so far I have uploaded one and put it on private for now. I could not find anywhere to upload a cover letter but I have seen some people make comments online that they have put more than one cover letter on file for various jobs. You never know if some people are deliberately promoting Universal Jobmatch so a level of care is needed in who you decide to trust. I have applied for five jobs in the last ten days that I found on the government monster site and even if I had been registered when applying for all of them I would still have no jobs officially applied for apart from the notes I would have made online. I have to attend tomorrow for my fortnightly signing and will probably allow them to see my activity if only to get some feedback so I can report on here what is said and clarify if my efforts would be regarded as good enough. It could result in me having to go to an enterprise centre every fortnight to get a load of emails printed off from a floppy disk as evidence but if it came to that then I would not bother with Universal Jobmatch. Universal Jobmatch doesn't make it quicker to apply than any other websites and in some circumstances it is a lot slower. On my activity link, although it shows the messages I have left regarding jobs I applied for, it doesn't show how long I have been on the website in terms of time but that might be recorded privately. It will be interesting to see the reaction I get to my efforts tomorrow.
