Tough times ahead 01 July 2012 After reading the comments of David Cameron recently it looks like he will do anything to to keep his party happy. His suggestions of getting tougher on the unemployed are grossly unfair. Most people unemployed are looking for work and suggesting that work programme providers sanction more people is wrong. I just read an article that showed that from june 2011 to january 2012 Working Links referred 11,910 people to the jobcentre to be considered for sanction. Of those 6,210 had benefits cut. Working Links were in fact the company who put more people forward for sanction than any of the other companies including A4E. At least it shows that nearly half of the people were able to convince the jobcentre that they had done nothing wrong but staff at these work providers have to become insensitive and treat people like numbers. I'm sure as I have experienced myself the staff are polite and friendly when you go along with things and I always apply for jobs and attend on time. I have heard various phone calls when someone is trying to explain why they didn't attend and if a person can't even bother to attend once or twice a week for an hour or so or even a week for the odd course then it is difficult to suggest that they are available for work. I'm not a fan of the work programme but making a little effort to attend on time and apply for jobs will at least keep them off your back. People do have rights but sadly complaints procedures with these work providers are usually kept in house and our complaints go to the managers who will always support their staff. The same thing applies to the jobcentre as I know to my cost from the past. A complaint first to the jobcentre manager about a member of staff will be fobbed off and then as I did you write to your member of Parliament and then you end up with an interview with the general manager for the area concerned who will again politely defend the particular member of staff. Many staff in jobcentres are very fair on the whole and I have more faith in them than in work programme providers especially now that targets are going to be even more harsh in the years to come. | ![]() |
