Bill Corbett epitaph

Bill, our oldest member, had a very full and active life.  Some of the following Information has been made available by his fellow members of the retired police officers association.

Bill joined Lanarkshire Constabulary in 1938 and was posted to Baillieston, later becoming the ‘Village Bobby’ at Greengairs, Airdrie, where he met his future wife Margaret. During the war Bill joined the Royal Tank Regiment, fighting through France, Germany and was involved in the liberation of Belsen Concentration Camp in 1945. Bill then resumed his varied police career; he had a spell in the Traffic Department  He thereafter worked throughout Lanarkshire at Bishopbriggs, Blantyre, Rutherglen, Wishaw and Motherwell, making steady progress through the ranks to Detective Chief Inspector and Head of the CID. He retired in February 1970 after 32 years police/army service and went on to enjoy 45 years of happy retirement with his wife and family.

In his spare time Bill enjoyed gardening and bowls. He joined Caldercraig Bowling Club, Moffat Mills, Airdrie in 1967 and and was elected Club President in 1975. He was also an active member of Templeton Bowling Club, Rutherglen, where he and Margaret spent many a happy time. 

Bill is survived by his wife Margaret and two sons, Bobby and Alistair. He was Grandfather to 4 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Margaret is currently a resident in a Nursing Home and does not keep good health.
