ABE McKEE

We were saddened to learn today from Anne that her husband ABE McKEE had passed away early this summer at their home in New Zealand following a long illness.

Abe first came to our attention when he wrote from New Zealand that he wished to visit us in our centenary year of 1995. We were not expecting such a memorable visit when we sent our invitation and he spent almost three months with us as a temporary (and very welcome) member whilst staying with relatives in Gartness. In that time he played a full and active part in almost all of our celebratory visitations and games and became our No 1 supporter in all games played. He visited every club in the district, and many beyond, and even managed to utilise his skills as an umpire at many of the events he attended. On one memorable day, in the company of the then secretary of Glasgow North East Bowling Association, he visited and played an end of bowls on every one of its constituent clubs before returning to Caldercraig a very tired but satisfied man.

On his return home he married Anne and they spent all of his remaining years as constant companions. They shared a love of life and travel and even embarked on two round the world trips, the first of which included several visits to Caldercraig where he introduced Anne to his many friends. Abe suffered a severe stroke a few years ago but this did not deter them from an extended visit to several continents including a last visit to Airdrie and Caldercraig.

Abe was an exceptional character and he will be long remembered by those among us who are proud and privileged to have known him as a friend.
