St Andrew's Day
26 November 2012

Monday, 26th November and Anstruther Rotary Club turned its weekly meeting over to a celebration of Saint Andrew – true it was slightly ahead of the official date of the 30th November, but nonetheless a highly enjoyable evening with family and friends. Widely known as the patron saint of Scotland, St. Andrew's Day is, since 2006, Scotland's official national day – it was then that the Scottish Parliament designated St Andrew's Day as an official bank holiday. Although most commonly associated with Scotland, a quick quiz reminded some of us that Saint Andrew is also the patron saint of Greece, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople!

Following an excellent meal served by the Craw’s Nest Hotel, the Scottish flavour continued with some great entertainment provided by students of Waid Academy. The young musicians delighted their audience with performances on French horn, keyboard, oboe, flute, fiddle and guitars. Music by Burns was to the fore - and with some very fine singing too.

The school’s dancers also showed what they could do with energy and great élan. There were of course traditional Scottish dances - including a sword dance - but then the evening was brought to a resounding close with a sprightly grand finale in the form of a sailor’s hornpipe.

Altogether a very fine evening and one reflected in a warm and appreciative vote of thanks to Waid Academy students proposed by Ian Brunton.
