At its meeting of 6th August the Anstruther Rotary Club had the pleasure of welcoming George Lyon, who has recently joined the club and who spoke of the different directions taken during his career - and of the very varied experiences these brought.

George explained that after academic qualification he followed the conventional route of becoming a law apprentice and then a solicitor, engaged in the usual run of work such as conveyancing.

However in 1973 he took the then quite rare step of moving into Industry. We heard of companies such as Scottish Aviation based at Prestwick; of aircraft like the ‘Bulldog’, ‘Jetstream’, ‘Starfighter’ and ‘Hercules’

And then of a change of direction to the Fife Forge Company of Kirkcaldy making shafts for marine use. To Lyle Offshore Group in Aberdeen and the offshore oil and gas support business. To British Shipbuilders and the story of Ferguson’s of Port Glasgow. To Devonport Royal Dockyard as head of legal services and then a move to a similar position at Rosyth. To an IT business in Glasgow and then finally and, in a sense returning to his roots, as a Consultant with BAE Sytems.

Altogether a fascinating story spiced with many a humorous anecdote - but clearly illustrating how George’s legal knowledge has served in supporting and guiding a diverse range of business and industry. Without doubt essential support, that is far removed from the dusty stereotype often tagged onto the legal profession.
Following many questions a vote of thanks was proposed by Bill Henderson
