COURAGEOUS CONDUCT OF LIVERPOOL POLICEMEN
At a meeting of the chapter of the order of St John of Jerusalem, held in London on the 11th instant, presided over by Sir Edward G L Perott, Earl, in the absence of his Grace the Duke of Manchester. KP, it was resolved to award the bronze medal for deeds of gallantry in saving life on land to Police constables Robert Nelson (No569) and William Carson (No552) of the Liverpool police force.
The presentation was in recognition of their couragous conduct in pursuing and destroying at great personal risk a mad dog, on the 14th November last, in the neighbourhood of Anfield.

Robert Nelson was born at Lower Brookfield Farm, Arkholme in 1959, he was the youngest of John and Elizabeth Nelson's 8 children.
Moving to Liverpool in the early 1880s, following his oldest brother James, he joined the City of Liverpool Police force, rising to the rank of Inspector. Between 1893 and 1895 Inspector Nelson was the captain of the Liverpool City Police 'tug o war' team that won the English championships. He is pictured wearing his medals, the St Johns ambulance medal, and the Liverpool City Police good service medal.
Robert married Elizabeth Hannah Garner on the 5th of April 1899 and they had four children,

George Edward (B.1901)
Hannah Margaret (B.1903)
Florence Elizabeth (B.1905).

From 1910/1911 Robert was the Worshipful Master of his Masonic Lodge, The Cycling and Athletic Lodge, in Wavertree, Liverpool.

In Cherished memory of ROBERT NELSON whose noble life ended August 3rd 1935, aged 75 years.
Also, ELIZABETH HANNAH beloved wife of the above, died 5th October 1953, aged 84.
