Living at Lower Broomfield Farm with his parents, brothers and sisters, John, Mary Ellen, William, Richard, Elizabeth Ann, George and Robert. Also on the farm Robert Jackson, his mother's Uncle, a blacksmith aged 78, from Kirby Lonsdale.

1871 Census.

John was lodging with brother Richard at 84 Damaide Street, Lancaster, they were joiner's apprentices. The house was owned by Joseph and Ellen Parker, Joseph was a Joiner by Trade.
