KDR 4 - 0 Harold Stayns (Whitworth cup quarter final)

A comfortable day at the office for Deighton who proved to be far too strong for fellow premier league side Harold Stayns. Deighton were hampered by injuries and absentees leaving a reshuffled pack who took time to settle and started slowly. However, Deighton went close on 2 occasions through a Dickinson header and a sitter by Wilson from 4 yards out. However, Gobbi finished expertly after being played in by Dickinson who was adapting well to his role in central midfield. Wilson then atoned for his earlier miss after Ryan Kaye played him in for a simple finish to make it 2-0 at half time.

After the break Deighton started slowly and were put under pressure by Stayns. However, they were still creating plenty of chances and Gobbi made it 3-0 after good work by Wilson, Kaye and Hodson who all had a hand in the goal. Dickinson made it 4, taking down a free kick before finishing for 6 yards out. To their credit Stayns did hit the woodwork twice but it was Deighton who really should've scored more with Wilson and Kaye misisng very presentable chances; the referee, who seemingly doesn't understand the offside rule, also put a halt to a whole host of Deighton attacks!

A decent performance especially in light of a number of players missing; Buckle will certainly have selection headaches ahead of next weeks senior cup trip to sunny Pateley Bridge.

Gobbi had a good game today and probably edged MOM ahead of Richard Taylor.

KDR 8 – 0 Dalton Athletic

Deighton brushed aside lower league opposition in a one sided encounter. The home side started brightly and found themselves 5-0 up at half time. Gobbi scored a hatrick, Meads added another goal from Defence and Richard Taylor scored another trade mark 6 yard box poachers goal! After the break, and with 3 substitutes introduced, the game threatened to peter out but KDR rallied and scored 3 further goal from Kaye, Taylor and Wilson.

Boroughbridge 3 – 0 KDR

This year’s county campaign came to a premature end after a poor 20 minute spell at the beginning of the first half. From the first whistle the home side looked sharp and attacked with pace and KDR simply couldn’t live with them. The first goal came from slack marking at the back post but the next 2 goals were just fantastic strikes that no one could do anything about. For the rest of the game the performance improved and Deighton had chances through Dickinson and Gobbi and deserved to pull a goal back but it wasn’t to be. Deighton paid the price for a lack of concentration which, against better quality opposition, will be punished.

KDR 6 -1 Otley Rovers

An average performance from the home side who found themselves in a battle with a spirited Otley side only for the game to turn on its head early in the second half when the Otley centre back was sent off. With the game tied at 1-1 KDR stepped up a gear and used their 1 man advantage to take control of the game creating numerous chances and, ultimately, scoring 5 second half goals without reply. Richard Taylor (2), Wilson (2), Meads (1) and Dickinson (1) were the scorers

HARLOW HILL 1 - 3 KDR

Deighton progressed through the 1st round of their Whitworth cup campaign following an assured performance against an improved Harlow Hill who have won their first 5 league matches.

The first half was dominated by KDR but they could've found themselves behind after Cooper fouled a Hrlow attacker in the box; however, the resulting penalty was a poor one which Fairbairn comfortably saved. From that point KDR made their dominance count after Dickinson's vision played in Gobbi who finished emphatically to make it 1-0. There were several other chances for the visitors who just lacked an end product that their build up play deserved. Dickinson showing his quality again with a delightful chip which hit the crossbar, Wilson hit a snap shot over with Taylor and Gobbi both causing the defence problems.

The 2nd half started brightly for Deighton who went 2 nil up after Wilson's cross was collected by Collings who's effort was blocked by the keeper but the rebound was turned in by an unfortunate Harlow defender. The game opened up as Harlow had to chase, however Cooper and Collings were equal to everything that was thrown at them. Deighton went 3 up after Dickinson's shot hit the bar and Brearton's clever pass left Wilson with the simple task of smashing the ball (beautifully) into the top corner! Harlow scored a consolation goal after a harsh free kick was given away; the finish from the set piece was superb though given Fairbairn no chance.

This was a much improved display with the whole squad turning in very good performances. Another top defensive display and, despite giving away a penalty, Cooper probably shaded Colling Jnr for man of the match.

KDR 1 - 0 KIRKBY MALZEARD

KDR maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a slightly fortuitous victory over a talented and committed Kirkby side. The 3 points were sealed after a fine goal from debutant Tom Dickinson who has made the move across the Wharfe from the horrible Oranges.

The game itself was a very poor one; both sides almost cancelling each other out. Kirkby had numerous chances from corners but never really opened up the KDR backline despite putting them under severe pressure. Once again Rangers have their defence to thank for the 3 points; James Meads was absolutely superb with Alex Wooler having a fine game on the left.

The winner came after substitute, Richard Jenner, sent across a high ball which Dicko took down superbly on his chest and calmy fired the ball low into the bottom corner. Chances were few and far between for KDR who far too often wasted possesion in good areas through indecisive passing. The positives to take out of this game were that, despite playing mediocre, 3 points were once again obtained even with notable absentees including last games match winner Jonathan Gobbi. MOM today was James Meads; first to every ball and despite not finding a blue shirt with any of his passes (!! he'll snap me in training for that) Kirkby were unable to find a way past him or the rest of the backline.

KDR 3 - 2 Bramham

KDR continued there decent start to the season with a deserved victory over local rivals Bramham. The game was played at a high tempo and contested in good spirit by both sets of players with KDR, like they did on Saturday, almost intent on throwing away a game they should really have won comfortably after leading 2-0 at half time and cruising.

The game got off to a good start for the home side after a dangerous McDonald free kick caused panic in the defence, the ball falling kindly for Cooper who lashed it into the net. The game ebbed and flowed after this point with both teams looking dangerous down the flanks without being able to produce any telling final balls. McDonald, who had settled well in midfield, had to be substituted following a nasty break to the finger but Deighton continued to press and a free kick from Wooler was headed home by Wilson. The two goal cushion seemed to settle KDR and knock Bramham out of their stride and for the rest of the half Deighton had chances through Kaye and Hodson and should really have gone in at half time with more goals to their name.

The second half saw a rejuvenated Bramham playing with more of the fight and spirit seen in previous encounters and they were back in the game when a cross from the wing was not dealt with by the KDR keeper and the ball looped straight into the net. This saw Deighton ring the changes as Gobbi was introduced to the attack and immediately started to stretch the back four being involved in creating chances for Hodson and getting on the end of a cross, flashing a header narrowly wide. At 2-1 KDR began to look nervous and had Fairbairn to thank for preserving their lead following a wonderful save, tipping the ball onto the bar form a dangerous Bramham attack. However, that reprieve was only short lived as the moment of the game came with 15 minutes to go; after a Bramham corner was only half cleared, the ball fell to Walton who struck a tremendous volley into the top corner from 20 yards. KDR failed to let their heads drop and Gobbi and Wilson conjured up a great chance from the re-start only for Wilson’s tame effort to be comfortably saved. The winning goal came with minutes remaining, for the second game running, and showed KDR’s never-say-die approach. Wilson turned a long ball across to Gobbi who out-muscled the defender and delivered a sublime chip to elude the goalkeeper and spark jubilant celebrations amongst the players and spectators.

It was a fitting end to an enjoyable game but KDR need to learn to kill teams off when they are leading- continuing to miss chances will prove costly against the top sides. Once again, Mike Cooper was superb in defence supported by Meads, captain Gaz Collings and Alex Wooler. Debutant Tom Hodson also impressed down the left flank.

Special thanks to the referee who was drafted in at the last minute after the official ref failed to show; it’s never going to be easy officiating this game and it was always going to be a baptism of fire.

Harold Stayans 2 - 3 KDR 21/08/10

KDR returned from Harrogate with all 3 points despite an uninspiring display against an improved Stayans team.  KDR got off to the best possible start; James Mead’s long throw was glanced goalwards by Ryan Kaye and the keeper could only parry his effort leaving a simple tap in for Russ Collings to open the scoring. Stayans gradually worked their way back into the game and were presented with a penalty, after a shirt tug in the area, which was easily converted by the Stayans number 9. KDR found themselves back in the lead after a quickly taken freekick by Wilson released Wooler on the left wing whos superb deep cross was clipped back across goal by Taylor leaving Kaye with a simple tap in to put KDR 2-1 up at the half time interval. The second half picked up where the 1st had left; Stayan’s direct approach constantly putting the KDR defence under pressure with a barrage of long throw ins. Finally Deighton succumbed to the pressure and after a scramble in the box the Stayan’s skipper finished neatly to bring the game back to 2-2 with the opposition very much in the ascendancy. However, there was a twist in the tail as a KDR corner caused panic in the Stayan’s defence and after a series of efforts were cleared off the line Danny gore finally put the ball into the back of the net. All across the pitch KDR were rusty and the fitness was suspect on what was a balmy August afternoon. However, there is plenty for manager Dean Buckle to contemplate after such a fantastic performance by KDR reserves with many players now pushing for a call up or recall. Anyway, 3 points is 3 points ands its hardly a bad sign if a team can win when playing well within itself. New KDR skipper Gaz Collings and his 3 defensive colleagues deserve special praise for withstanding so much pressure in a game that could easily have turned into a defeat.
