The Law!!

These basic rules were drawn up for the first ABC in 2005 and have hardly changed since. They are read out each year for the benefit of the virgins and in the unlikely event that someone forgets one of them.

  1. This is a fun day
  2. Please do not be offended
  3. Bilco rules apply for a lost ball
  4. No Returns are not allowed
  5. Virgin Caps have to be worn all day
  6. Fresh air shots do not count
  7. Play with the balls you are given
  8. Play from the front tees
  9. The winner has to wear the Purple helmet for the remainder of the night

Rule1: Yes, the Purple Helmet is important and we would all like to win it but this is one golf day when any other prize is not worth worrying about. This is a fun day where we play golf for a laugh but it is more about the social side and enjoying the craic with our friends old and new. All players would do well to remember that.

Rule 2: If you're easily offended or sensitive then the ABC is maybe not for you!!

Rule 3: If after searching for 5 minutes you lose a ball, drop roughly where you think your ball was and play from there with an extra one shot penalty.
eg. If you lose a ball off the tee, instead of going back to the tee and playing your 3rd shot from the tee you would drop roughly where you thought your ball was and you would then be playing your 4th shot.

Rule 4: In 211 rounds of golf played so far there have only been six No Returns recorded. The Management doesn't want any more! The ABC is also a team competition and by handing in an NR you are letting down the other members of your team. An NR may lead to an automatic red card.

Rule 5: We have a red cap scheme so we can all identify the ABC virgins. This is for anyone that hasn't played in the Auld Boy's Championship before and may be inexperienced or unfamiliar with their surroundings!!

Rule 7: This rule is there for a reason. It's a leveller. We dish out balls at the start so that everyone either has the same balls or the best players get the worst balls. It wouldn't be fair if the best players were using their fancy Pro V1 balls and hitting them where they wanted. We like free balls or failing that cheap balls that are as hard as stones.

Rule 8: When we're playing at the Orkney Golf Club we play off the forward tees like we did when we were Juniors.

Before we go onto the course players are reminded;

  • There may be other people on or around the course or club.
  • Use the bins and do not to leave litter on the course or in the ditches.
  • Replace all divots and repair pitchmarks and take care of the course, particularly the greens.
