Arson in Ashby – The Aftermath
by Ashby Rambler - 16:35 on 28 June 2015
Having seen the damage to the Playing Field Pavilion at first hand, and having had time to reflect during what also turned out to be a dreadful week internationally, the Rambler offers these thoughts…
All residents of our village to whom I have spoken, as well as comments on Cold Ashby Children’s Playground Facebook page, indicate the level of disgust, outrage and hurt felt by everyone in response to the arson attack on the pavilion last weekend.
All are appalled and saddened that a valued village facility has been violated. Originally constructed and supported by villagers who, together with more recent residents, continue freely to give their time, expertise and efforts to maintain and improve it, the site ( playing field, children’s playground and pavilion) is at the heart of our community.
This arson attack may, temporarily, have disgusted and depressed us but it will not have extinguished our ‘spirit’, nor our determination to rise to the challenge of restoration.
On another separate matter:
The possible sale of a small and, arguably, redundant piece of Cold Ashby's Playing Field was discussed at a recent public meeting and the committee's preferred outcome was supported by the majority of those present in a well-conducted secret ballot.
The Rambler knows that CAPFA did not approach the village without giving their proposal due consideration and thorough research. Nevertheless, suggestions were made at the meeting which indicated that some felt this may not have been thorough enough and that the committee's proposed sale was handled in a manner which was divisive.
The Rambler does not support this view.
CAPFA consists of a small group of extremely dedicated volunteers whose time, experience and professional expertise are employed on behalf of the village to manage an asset which we all value and which is used by all age groups in the area. The recent upgrading of the Children's Playground was a huge achievement, initiated by similarly dedicated individuals and supported by all but a few of Cold Ashby's residents.
We must unite and back CAPFA if our Sports Pavilion is to be swiftly restored to use.
