Today 1st July 2014, the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme I would like to share with you, with kind permission of Rosie & Paul Dansey a photograph of Private Harry Bates (G/5193) who was Paul’s uncle. Harry served with The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and was killed in action on 1st July 1916 aged 22. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. His square has been stitched by Rosie Dansey and can be seen in the Gallery along with the photograph.
