Today 1st July 2014 the anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme I would like to share with you with the kind permission of Christine Clifford, details of Private Joseph Edward Ayres (10484) who served with the Lincolnshire Regiment. Joseph was Christine’s great uncle.

He was born in 1884 in Rugby, the son of John Alfred and Emily Ayres. The family moved from Rugby to Lincoln where Joseph worked for the Midland Railway in the Goods Department.  He served first in the Balkans and then on the Western Front and was killed in action on 1st July 1916, one of 471 casualties from his battalion. He is buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood and is commemorated on Lincoln’s War Memorial also a memorial on Lincoln Railway Station and in All Saints’ Church, Monks Road, Lincoln .

Thank you Christine for stitching a square in Joseph’s memory, see Christine's square in the Gallery.
