Super Six Division 2

30th September  2018 Report & Tables

Sunday this week saw the best of the Short Mat Players from both sides of the Border take part for the Division 1 PBR Shield & Division 2 Mark Thomson Shield. Each team will supply; Singles Player, a Pair and a Triple they get two point per win and two points for the overall highest shots a total of 8 points on offer

This season saw a new team Route76 enter the league and they certainly made a name for themselves in the Singles Gavin Maxwell beat Andrew Snape of the March Hares 23—13 and the pair of J Marchbank and Yvonne Hiddleston of Route 76 done the same too the Hares Z Kirk and K Haining beating them 26—6 the triples they also won 17—7 (sorry no names on cards) all 8 points went to the newbies Route 76. Next up were the two Springfield teams the Sharks and the Scorpions in the singles Sam Patterson played a captains role of the Sharks and he played a relative newcomer to the game Ian Foster who acquitted himself very well for the first time in the league environment  the Sharks won 28—10 .In the pairs it was a very tight game for these old club rivals for to see who gets the bragging rights  Alastair Ritchie and Sheila Warrick of the Scorpions raced into a 8-2 lead after 5 ends but with dogged determination Billy Render and Frank Clarkson got it back to 8-7 after 8 ends the Scorpions got it to 11-8 then in a nervous last two end Frank and Billy  got 3 shots to make it 11—11 and no bragging rights  In the triples the Experienced trio of Harold Maughan Isobel Render and Peter Woodley of the Sharks raced into an early lead and overpowered the Scorpion trio 22--8 Hamish Warrick  James Bethune and another newbie Christine Foster who played the fast mats very well for her first time in a competition environment she will only get better with more coaching the Sharks won 7--1. The last games of the day were between Wetheral Wildcat and Wetheral Wolverines it was a close game up until the 12th end all square at 11 each then Alan Smith of the Wolverines who pulled away to win 26 –16 over the Wildcats Paul Hardy   2 points Wolverines. In the pairs it was a much closer affair with the Wolverines Isobel Mounsey and David White beating the Wildcats pair of Christine Proctor and Carol Hardy   15—14 2 points Wolverines. The trio of Maura Delap, Geoff Hall and Shirley White  made it a clean sweep for the Wolverines over the Wildcats John Proctor, Ruth Hewetson and Lesley Hewson   17—8 2point plus the bonus 8-0

Division 2

First up in the singles were Jamie Johnstone for the Springfield Scorpions against Gavin Maxwell for Route 76 it was Jamie that got off to the worst start Getting beat 16 -3 at the half way stage but what a comeback eventually winning 22-19 to give Scorpions a much needed 2 points. In the pairs it was the regular paring of Alastair Ritchie and Sheila Warrick of the Scorpions they were up against the Route 76 pair of Ed Harkness and Gary Stewart it was still close at the tenth end only two in it then after that the Springfield pair never got another end going down 17-8 2 points Route 76. In the triples it was the trio of James Bethune, Hamish Warrick and a relative new starter Lee Wright who only had his first competitive game in October for the Scorpions they went down well Beaten  by the Route 76  trio of Scottish international players of Rab McNeil Yvonne Hiddleston and Jimmy Broatch  25-9  2 points and the overall 2  making it 6-2

The last Singles of the day saw Sam Patterson of Springfield Sharks get the 2 points for a walkover the Wetheral Wildcat couldn’t field a singles player 2 points Sharks Next it was the pairs with Donald Johnstone and Billy Render for the Sharks up against Paul  & Carol Hardy for the Wildcats it was a close game up to the ninth end ware the wildcats were leading by one and in the next 3 ends the sharks scored 12 points to win 24-11 to make it a flattering score 2 points the Sharks In the triples the Sharks trio of Peter Woodley, Harold Maughan and Isobel Render were in a very tight game with John Proctor, Leslie Hewson and David  Gudgeon of the Wildcats  it was the wildcats that got two in the last to win 13-11 to get the last 2 points   6-2 to the Sharks
