New Interests Unfolding...
by Unknown - 18:45 on 04 January 2014
I'm staying near London over X-mas and the New Year and already new interests are unfolding... In a recent book on the Anglo-Saxons ('The Anglo-Saxon World' by N.J. Higham & M.J. Ryan) I came across a photo of a Viking ring found in the Thames near Chelsea which can now be seen in the Victoria & Albert Museum and is generally known as the 'Chelsea ring'. I liked the simplicity and directness of the design - plus the fact that in the centre it seemed to show a dragon-like beast! If you're interested, go to the V&A website at www.vam.ac.uk and search the collections to have a look (not 'Havelok' - he was a Dane).
Also, I took a train from Bromley to Canterbury for a day trip. In the Roman Museum there was a Celtic mirror - the only one to be found in Kent (at Chilham Castle in 1993). Later this led me to look up other Celtic mirrors which can be found very easily on the web. Go to: www.celticmirrors.org
