Seahorse Swimming Club
Crewe Swimming Baths, Flag Lane, Crewe
Founded 1956
‘Teaching of swimming to people with disabilities’
Swimming for the disabled
Swimming offers more to disabled people than almost any other activity. It provides freedom, fun and a challenge, which is so often denied to those who are unable to move freely. Swimming amongst disabled is becoming increasingly popular and of immense value.
History
The Seahorse swimming club was formed in 1956, when members of the Crewe Baths Committee gave Seahorse exclusive swimming rights and sole use of the swimming baths on Thursday evenings. This partnership has continued to the present day, with the Crewe Town Council Mayor being the Club President.
Halliwick Concept
The Seahorse club is affiliated to the Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy. This is an organisation, which develops the teaching of swimming to people with disabilities. For over half a century people with disabilities have been experiencing freedom in water learning through using the Halliwick concept. www.halliwick.org.uk
Members
The club caters for a wide variety of disabilities and all ages and the swimming ability of our members is mixed, but most of our swimming members achieve a great deal in the water, whether it’s swimming 5 metres or representing their country at swimming.
Volunteers
Seahorse relies on volunteer helpers to run the club, as most swimmers require one to one help in the pool. The helpers will have to undertake a Criminal Record Bureau check.
Fundraising
The club relies on donations and fundraising activities to keep it afloat.
Social Events
Members and helpers are offered days out and parties on special occasions such as Christmas.
