Tut Tut Tutbury
27 August 2008

Popular Alliance Councillor Craig Chapman caused a bit of havoc in a neighbouring Parish by knocking doors and entering shops to ask if the occupants and residents knew that they had upside down Union Jack flags flying from their buildings and homes.

The Staffordshire village of Tutbury really got the Tut Tut treatment as shoppers and residents realised that they have just celebrated the Olympics with a series of approximately 14 of 20 national flags displayed upside down along their Main Street.

One shopper was so embarrassed that he went off knocking more doors whilst a shop keeper picked up the phone to their local Parish Council straight away. Even worse, it transpires that the local Scout troop hung the flags.

Following the 3 years of aggro handed out to the US country band Dixie Chicks after their singer commented about being embarrassed that her and G.Bush came from the same state, I think it is safe to say that the hanging of the stars at the bottom of the stripes in USA would get someone shot. We certainly don't want that reaction in our country, but a basic understanding of a few national symbols and treasures cannot be too much to ask for can it ?

Another resident suggested that our flag is only called the Union Jack if flown on a navy ship. As far as I know, the Navy would fly the Red Ensign, not the Union Jack. If anyone can add to this, please do get in touch.
