Baldrick's Take on the Euro

by email received - 08:47 on 08 January 2012

Baldrick: "What I want to know sir, is before there was a Euro there were lots of different types of money that different people used. And now there's only one type of money that the foreign people use. And what I want to know is, how did we get from one state of affairs to the
other state of affairs"

Blackadder: "Baldrick. Do you mean, how did the Euro start?"

Baldrick: "Yes sir"

Blackadder: "Well, you see Baldrick, back in the 1980's there were many different countries all running their own finances and using different types of money. On one side you had the major economies of France, Belgium, Holland and Germany, and on the other, the weaker nations of Spain, Greece, Ireland, Italy and Portugal. They got together and decided that it would be much easier for everyone if they could all use the same money, have one Central Bank, and belong to one large club where everyone would be happy. This meant that there could never be a situation whereby financial meltdown would lead to social unrest, wars and crises".

Baldrick: "But this is sort of a crisis, isn't it sir".

Blackadder: "That's right Baldrick. You see, there was only one slight flaw with the plan".

Baldrick: "What was that then sir?"

Blackadder: "It was bollocks".

Update - we received an email from a reader who agreed 100% with the sentiment of the above joke and rightly pointed out that the EU in theory should be a good idea, but the fact that everyone concerned is out for what they can get for themselves makes it the poison pit that it has become. The writer also made a point of bemoaning that we are able to do so little about our EU dilemma, that we have to resort to making jokes about it.

That is of course the truth, however we will suggest that given the amount of negative newspaper coverage the EU gets in the UK, it could quite rightly be expected that there would be more than enough of us to march on Westminster and Brussels and tell them all to sod off, but the fact is, we have no rallying point nor party to lead this and capture the imagination of the public.

So we ask,

i) do the public simply not care ?

ii) do they not understand ?

iii) do they expect someone else to get rid of the EU for us ?

iv) do they not trust any politicians to act in the interests of the UK before they bow down to overseas pressure ?

We certainly do not meet many people who rave about what a superb job the EU does for us. Even the majority of Eastern European immigrants can't believe how mad our government must be to let them all in and shower them in opportunities, whilst our own infrastructure and jobs situation crumbles around out feet.

We certainly do not trust UKIP to represent those in the UK who try to make a stance against the EU. The party has many excellent and keen members, but their leadership actively avoids having any position of responsibility, making it little more than a club to keep everyone happy and conveniently out of the way of our government.

In UK politics, its ironic

..that UKIP is so toothless and easily prodded into its little corner, almost as if it were a Tory plant to water down us anti-EU flag wavers.

..that the mere existence of the BNP slows the very aim they wish to achieve - vastly reduce immigration

..that race card MPs like Diane Abbott are racists themsleves

These are 3 examples that slow down the process of achieving what they stand up for. Somebody somewhere is having a damn good laugh at our expense.
