Irish Anti-EU Campaign

The Vatican says resistance to EU prescriptive laws “logical”

Cóir has welcomed comments from the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Bertone, in which the Pope's chief diplomat stressed the importance of European countries "keeping their own identity", and refers to resistance to EU laws which would undermining traditional values as “logical”.

In an interview with Czech Daily MF Dnes, the Cardinal said  "Individual European countries have their own identity. The European Union prescribes its laws or views to them and they do not have to fit with their traditions and history. Some countries are logically
resisting this - for example, Ireland. If Europe recognized homosexual couples as equal to marriage, for example, it would go against its own history. And it would be adequate to stand against it. The Church wants to encourage the states in this."

Cóir has made the defence of Life and other important values a key part of our campaign. We also believe that was the logical thing to do.

Professor Ray Kinsella spells it out in the WSJ – A No vote best for the economy

Leading Irish economist, Professor Ray Kinsella, writes today in the Wall Street Journal, encouraging the Irish people to “vote No to reinvigorate Europe”.

Professor Kinsella wrote that: “To encourage the belief that a dependence on Europe is the key to healing its self-inflicted wounds is to make a serious economic miscalculation—and to sell its people short.” He also stated that Europe had “lost direction, and has been taken over by the political establishment at the expense of respect for constitutional rights, in what is supposed to be a Europe of the peoples.

“The Irish have never been lacking in courage. They should not allow their historic vote to be hijacked by those who promulgate a "dependent" culture and, by implication, cast doubt on Ireland's ability to re-imagine and rebuild a strong and sustainable economy within a healthy and democratic Europe,” he concluded.

Cóir website gets 4000 hits in morning before the vote alone

As voters begin to make up their minds they are increasingly looking to Coir's No to Lisbon website to look for information and have questions answered.

"Our website has been the most popular of all the Irish Lisbon websites since the beginning," said Brian Hickey of Cóir. "The independent alexa ranking still puts us, not only as the most popular site, but as three times more popular than our nearest rival, the Referendum Commission."

Mr Hickey said that 4,000 users had gone to Cóir's site this morning alone. "The number of hits jumped by just over 4,000 and that's before the evening rush we're expecting this evening," said Mr Hickey.

He said the huge amount of traffic to the site showed that the Yes campaigns “shrill and false allegations of lies had backfired.”

URGENT: Ensure YOU are part of the vote monitoring team

The purpose of this update is to ensure that Friday’s vote is fair, free and transparent and that every vote cast is correctly counted.

Here’s what you need to do:

1. Print off the attached form here. It is the first document - Monitoring Form

2. Between 9.45pm and 10pm on Friday go to your polling station with this form.

3. Ask the Presiding Officer for the information needed to complete the form – ie how many boxes are in the station, how many votes were cast in each box, and the total of votes cast in the polling station. If you prefer, you can note the number of boxes and their ID numbers when you cast your vote earlier in the day.

4. Organise others to cover other polling stations in your area.

NB NB: When you have that organized CALL the Cóir office to let us know what stations you are covering. That means we can allocate resources to where they are needed and make sure as many stations as possible are covered.

CAUTION: When you go to the polling station at close of business, the Returning Officer may refuse the information. You should politely insist that as a taxpayer you are entitled to the information as part of ensuring a free and fair referendum. If they continue to refuse, take the name of the Returning officer and report the matter to your local Coir convenor.

5. The next day go to the count. Go immediately to speak to the Returning Officer. Ensure that every box is to be opened in front of you/other witnesses – and that the total of the votes recorded on the envelope attached to the box will be tallied to the actual votes in the box.

That means the seal should ONLY be broken on the box in front of witnesses/you. When the votes are counted, check that YOUR tallies match: that the same number of votes come out of each box as you recorded on your monitoring form the night before. At the very least ensure the total number of votes cast in your polling station match the number of votes confirmed by the Presiding Officer.

If there are any discrepancies let us know IMMEDIATELY – call your local Cóir convenor.

REMEMBER – It's very important you let us know by FRIDAY morning which stations you/your team can cover. As per our previous message – we need you to ensure that Friday’s vote is fair, free and transparent and that every vote cast is correctly counted.

Vote NO on 2nd October
