Gordon Brown - Cursed, Useless, or Both ??

by Craig Chapman - 07:30 on 12 February 2009

It just gets worse every day for our beleaguered Prime Minister doesn't it. Is it possible to have the anti-Midas touch ? If so, he has it in both hands and probably both feet. The below news report from www.virgin.net outlines the latest cock-up.

Gordon Brown is to face serious questions over his handling of the recession and the banking crisis later, as he is grilled by senior MPs after a day of bleak news for the British economy.

The Prime Minister's appearance before the Commons Liaison Committee is the first since the taxpayer-funded bank bail-outs, VAT cut and other measures were introduced last year in a bid to counter the downturn.

But with the Bank of England Governor warning of a far more severe slump than expected and unemployment soaring to a decade-long high, the high-level panel will want to know whether the action is working.

Mr Brown's judgment will also come under scrutiny in the wake of the resignation of his appointee Sir James Crosby as deputy chairman of City watchdog the Financial Services Authority (FSA).

Sir James, who has written two reports for Mr Brown's Government, stepped down amid allegations - denied - that when he was head of HBOS he sacked a senior executive for warning the bank was expanding too fast.

The PM said that the ex-banker, who said he quit to avoid being a distraction to the FSA, had been "right" to resign as there were "serious but contested allegations" that he would want to defend himself against.

But shadow chancellor George Osborne said the issue raised "serious questions" about Mr Brown's judgment.

The political furore over Sir James partly overshadowed more gloomy news about the wider economy: a warning of a "deep recession" by bank Governor Mervyn King and joblessness coming close to breaking the two million mark.

The recession is top of the agenda for the session - expected to last for up to two and a half hours - along with "The City and banking issues".

In a sign of how quickly the economic picture has changed, the last time Mr Brown attended the twice-yearly hearing, in July, the main concern was high oil prices and mounting inflation.

Popular Alliance Comment.

Will somebody please save us from any more of this man's catestrophic gaffs.

He has made a career of arrogantly ignoring advice, making terrible decisions, appointing flounderers and passing the blame.

Popular Alliance will be launching an unprecidented attack on his and previous govermments later this week and we are quite sure that he and many more politicians who stand neck deep in the hoola alongside him, will not have the good fortune to escape from this.
