I'm A Creepy Crawlie, Get Me Out Of Here !!!

by Craig Chapman - 12:20 on 26 November 2008

GMTV this morning asked Peter Mandleson a very pressing question at this time of national panic, regarding what is left, if anything, of our economy.

"So Peter, have you ever fancied taking part in “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here ?”

He declined the suggestion.

Given the bleak financial front the we face (especially with people like him involved in it) I guess the great British stiff upper lip and raise a joke chaps spirit could answer why our time was being wasted on such a question. We do note however, given the number of crawling, slimy creatures that feature on that programme (and also the the flora and fauna !!) perhaps Mr Mandleson could become the slimiest and lowest crawling yet ?

There would surely be a very long queue of wichity bugs at Brisbane airport screaming “We’re Creepy Crawlies, Get Us Out Of Here !!!”

We also did note that his threat to the credit card companies - of getting tough over their interest rates and penalties, will be gaining his undivided attention.

He never once mentioned that perhaps people know the form when using a credit form and should also perhaps try living within their means in the first place – but that would be knocking his government and their disastrous policies, wouldn’t it ? them having juggled our economy on a desk full of shiny visas and mastercards for the last 11 years.

Our thoughts on the Treasury report stating Labour would take VAT up to 18.5% in 2011 is one of no surprise whatsoever. These were described as “leaked” when in fact they were distributed as part of an official report, just that someone printed off the wrong version. Labour's squirming has been a pleasure to see this morning.

Firstly Labour has no alternative but to tax the living daylights out of us to pay for their wastage. The fact that this document was wrongly delivered to MPs is typical of their internal incompetence and probably also of their low standing with the flunkies who conveniently did the printing. Given Labour’s handling of this nation’s finances, we’re more surprised that it only 18.5%. They just cannot understand that we need to cut spending, not keep finding ways of topping up the income.

Jane Moore says it very well in The Sun today as she drops the bombshell that businesses offering a good service alongside their products are far less likely to wither during the financial crises. Unfortunately, we cannot include our energy suppliers in that equation as (i) they are anonymous (ii) most of them aren’t even based here and (iii) its bloody cold and we all need the heating on.

Figures in yesterday’s papers went into great depth regarding the rise in public sector jobs since 1997. In some areas, two thirds of new jobs created between 1997 and 2006 are paid for by the tax payer – at a time when our armed forces have shed thousands of places. New jobs for women since 1997 show over 90% are in the public sector.

Popular Alliance have, since our party's beginning, called for smaller government. The establishing of the Welsh Assembly and the Scottish Parliament (when they are already fairly represented in Westminster) showed huge rises in tax burdens and guaranteed pensions in those areas. Thank God the English Regional Assemblies did not come to fruition.

The private sector has to raise the money to pay for these jobs and benefits, yet growth in most areas is very low and many industries are held back over red tape, EU interference and cheap, lowly taxed imports. This demonstrates how much money our government is willing to spend on itself, as it bites the hand, arm and shoulder that feeds it.
