Here is their latest Bulletin with links to their website :-
Put the 'Bedroom Tax' to sleep TPA supporter Mike Hobson has been campaigning against Purbeck council’s unilateral decision, so far, to institute a tax on property extensions – known as the bedroom tax. This is a small council, and thus provides us with a ripe opportunity to get Purbeck’s councillors to overturn this policy that could very well be extended to other councils to adopt any similar tax. Needless to say, if it is defeated in Purbeck it’ll be proved to be deeply unpopular and other councils will think twice about taking up the tax. So please visit our blog here where you can write to Purbeck’s councillors to get them to drop the bedroom tax. When a tax freeze isn’t a tax freezeIn last week’s Romford Recorder there was a story lauding Cllr. Michael White, the leader of Havering council, in his commitment to freeze council tax. In the very same article he says the council is on course to keep tax rises down to 3.5%. That doesn’t sound like a tax freeze to us. Please join us in asking Cllr White if he will freeze council tax in 2009 or whether he’ll lump Havering’s taxpayers with yet another tax bombshell. You can write to Cllr White here.Bard IdeaThe Scottish city of Stirling is to appoint a resident poet, or makar, it has been reported today. After an absence of 500 years, the bard will write poetry for special occasions and festivities and will "celebrate everyday life". I am sure the fact their council is already £90 million in debt and still hiring doesn't make them feel like "celebrating life". Schools should be pouring all available funds into improving resources for pupils, not committing themselves to additional costs. Children should be inspired to write poetry by their English teachers. While the idea of a resident bard may be appealing, this money will be coming straight out of the pockets of ordinary families – it's paid for by a council, not a Royal Court. If you want to take this up with the leader of Stirling council, you can email him here.Northumberland County Council: spending money it doesn't haveWith a debt of £300 million, should Northumberland County Council be splashing out on jobs like this? If you live in Northumberland you can ask the council face to face how they got into so much debt and why they're still intent on cramming their Town Hall with more bureaucrats at their public question time, the details of which you can find here.Join us for a campaign dayThe TPA team will be in St. Albans next Friday, 31st October, to petition for lower council tax. We will be meeting at St. Albans station at 9.30am and petitioning in the high street. It would be great if we could get lots of TPA supporters out and give St. Albans council a fright at the sheer numbers of TPA supporters campaigning for lower taxes! If you are coming to join us please email Tim Aker at tim.aker@taxpayersalliance.com.Pick of the BlogsCampaign: Doing the right thing regardless of the EUCampaign: Keep on lobbyin'
