Russian Threats Over Georgian Crisis

by Craig Chapman - 14:08 on 03 September 2008

I believe that the Popular Alliance almost agrees with the European Union on one issue this week, as incoming pigs are reportedly nearing Heathrow Airport’s runway one.

Our illustrious leader Gordon Brown is pushing the European Union to impose sanctions against Russia regarding its military moves into democratic Georgia. He says that we should not tolerate aggression against a democratic state or its democratically elected leader.

This is a positive statement with which we agree in principal.

We must then however, note who is calling for this move and what the consequences might be.

i) By what right does the unelected Mr Brown have the moral authority and moral background to speak out for democracy ? He has opposed all public, press and opposition worries regarding signing us over to the European Union, he has lied about a referendum on this issue and changes tack on his own polices every 5 minutes.

ii) Given that we rely on Russia for nearly all of our gas supplies and that all but one major oil pipeline runs from the Middle East through Russia (the remaining pipeline runs through Georgia by “co-incidence”) we consider that either Mr Brown and his backwards-thinking government sorts out our own power production crisis or shuts his mouth very quickly.

A Prime Minister's first responsibility has to be for the safety of his nation and whether Russia fancies either a military war or a fuel war (and they are posturing for both), the citizens, industry and infrastructure of this country cannot, as things stand today, survive a cold winter without gas supplies that Russia could stop by the press of a single button.

We then question the European Union’s motives and supposed reasons for existence.

i) The independent governments within the EU spout a lot of hot air about their collective strength as a Union, but are then quick to shout out if something does not favour their own country. They are never going to work as “the one” that they pretend to be. This further strengthens the belief that the EU simply exists to empower France and Germany.

ii) Georgia, as a new member state within the EU is quite rightly expecting more back-up from this so called collective that they have joined. OK, they are more "on-the-take" than the "give" as a poorer, ex-communist country, but this again demonstrates that lack of will within the EU to support the collective it pontificates about.

The conclusions have to be that :-

i) Mr Brown heads a golden milk cow with no support from other EU members, they just want our money

ii) The EU has no interest in helping any member state under individual pressure

iii) Russia knows this and is therefore free to throw its power and threats around as it wishes

iv) UK has been bled dry by the EU and the result is has been no investment in our future infrastructure as we have given all that money to make other nations stronger, leaving us in a very precarious position

v) Mr Brown, Mr Blair before him and the Labour party have collectively made the UK into a very weak nation. The previous Conservative government started this ball rolling through mass privatisation and appalling levels of maintenance and forward planning

vi) All this hot air cannot be doing the ozone layer of Europe any good at all !!

Popular Alliance would immediately hold a referendum on our EU membership, with all of the pros and cons on the table. We favour leaving the Union as soon as possible as it has a negative impact on too many areas of our lives - mostly the areas that are suffering the most as a direct result.

Popular Alliance believes that the UK is perfectly able to develop and run a combination of mostly renewable energy generating systems, that can sufficiently power our nation, making us independent from events and motives from unstable regimes in Russia and the Middle East. We canniot understand how our government has not done more to address this this issue.

Popular Alliance recognises that political fall-outs with our neighbouring countries over such issues further isolate our position and standing. We do not need to pretend that we are members of a flimsy, gutless European Union, we just need to have good trading and tourism links with our neighbours – our views and policies can then stand strong and not be weakened by outside unstable influences.

We should offer strong diplomatic support to Georgia, but at this time, we can risk no more.
