Farewell & ThanksReligion As A WeaponBanking, Bankers and GovernmentEU Arrogance - again !!Davie Goes To StrasbourgIndex Who do you really care for Mr Brown ?by Don Clark - 14:17 on 28 April 2008Who do you really care for Mr Brown ?Gordon Brown has always said that he is committed to social justice. Well he has had 10 years as Chancellor and over half a year as Prime Minister to prove it.
As a young Mr Brown climbing his way up the political ladder he dropped a heavy hint that social strife could result from this unfairness as he questioned whether “there remains a common interest between the top one per cent to whom Mrs Thatcher had given so much, and the rest of the nation”.Yet according to the estimable Institute for Fiscal Studies, this wicked Thatcherite attempt to do down the poor in order to enrich the wealthy has not only not been reversed since Labour came to power, it has actually accelerated.
Largely because of the strongly performing economy and the Labour tax policies the rich have grown richer while the poor have become only slightly less poor or, in some cases, actually poorer. This is what is so curious about Mr Brown’s swansong Budget decision last year to scrap the 10p starting rate of tax.
For it continues to widen the wealth gap. The penny is only now dropping with Labour MPs as a large number of those "rebels" who are now leading the opposition to the abolition of the 10p rate actually voted for it last year when the Finance Act was passing through the Commons.Costly though the collateral damage is proving to be, this clumsy move has wider implications. It reinforces the IFS’s thesis that after a decade in office Labour is still failing to deliver the kind of policies that can meet its stated aim of leveling out wealth inequality.
Popular Alliance Comment:As a party that are committed to taking the lowest paid out of tax altogether we deplore any attempt to tax those on low incomes more. The tax credit system that Brown uses as his excuse all the time is not the best way forward. The low paid deserve to be rewarded for choosing work and not just benefits. This reinforces the suspicion that this Government has lost its sense of purpose, has run out of ideas and is getting important decisions badly wrong. And some of the poorest in society are being asked to pay the price.Add your comment Please note that whenever you submit something which may be publicly shown on a website you should take care not to make any statements which could be considered defamatory to any person or organisation. | ||
