Are Tree Huggers Hugging The Wrong Trees

by Craig Chapman - 08:27 on 07 April 2008

So what are a bunch of tree huggers doing in London, ranting about a place they’ve mostly never been to and probably know even less about ? Where are they on the Iraq, Zimbabwe, Dafur, Rwanda, Kuwait, Afghanistan, North Korea, etc issues. Are some region’s woes more equal than others ?

China has actually made great steps to improve its citizen’s lives and there is more discipline on its streets than we have on our own, so perhaps those in glass houses should consider just who they are throwing their stones at. Of course things aren’t great in Tibet and good luck to them if they want their independence, though with China’s economy growing daily, perhaps it might even be a good idea to hang on and see where it takes them ?

My stones would be aimed a lot closer to home - at Brussels, 10 Downing Street, The Home Office, LibDem Party HQ and the fully financed houses of those who think my tax should pay for their lives. Only then would I start to consider issues beyond our borders.

How about adopting these doctrines, which would make the world a far less put-upon-place :-
(i) Keep Politics out of Sport
(ii) Keep Religion out of Politics
(iii) Keep Tree Huggers out of Cities
(iv) Keep Townies out of Countryside Issues
(v) Keep My Tax out of Scrounger’s Bank Accounts

It is quite likely that China is not covering itself in glory over how it runs Tibet, but running around London assaulting Blue Peter presenters is not going to make even one China Government official bat an eyelid. I didn’t see Studenty types running around London complaining about our troops on the streets of Northern Ireland in the 70s and 80s, choosing sides and prolonging the bad feeling (which many nations accused us of doing) and I didn’t see Chinese running around Beijing complaining about that issue either. (And before the fingers start pointing, I served in the army in N.Ireland and friends of mine were killed over there at The Drop-in-Well in Ballykelly and also by the bomb in Birmingham).

British People Protesting About Politics ????

It was however, actually quite relieving to see some British people getting hot under the collar about something political at last. How come they weren’t running around in the same manner when Gordon Brown was signing us away to the European Union ? That was a monumental surrender of personal and political freedoms that is far closer to home than Tibet, about which we know comparatively little. Or don’t us Brits count ? Perhaps those rampaging around London are not tax payers and therefore don’t care that Gordon Brown wastes so much of our hard earned money ??? It can certainly be argued that China's undemocratic ruling of Tibet could be likened to the EU's undemocratic ruling of the United Kingdom (for which we are charged an exorbitant amount) except that their leader, the Dalai Lama has not betrayed his people by signing their lives over to an unelected body. Maybe we should even be saying "Lucky Tibet, their leader is honest to his people."

Please note : I do have sympathy with the Tibet situation, however I believe that a balanced perception is required. I also believe that many people should take off their rose tinted glasses and take a proper look at events in our own country before telling the rest of the world what to do.
I would quite enjoy a Responsible Employed Peoples March through a run down council estate at 11.30am on a Monday morning to protest at those just getting out of bed.

Additional Comments - 9th April

I am floored by some of the comments made by people complaining that the Chinese security staff man-handled protesters. The only ones they fought off were those threatening physical violence on our streets. A CO2 fire extinguisher was aimed in the faces of the torch carrier and the security staff, that could blind and disfigure someone for life. I doubt very much if even one of those protesters knows anything about sports and olympic values and they will be camped-out by some town bypass route next week.
My guess is that the Chinese security staff will go home thinking - "well if that what freedom of expression brings, the West is welcome to it." Political statements and beliefs are one thing, thuggery and idiotic attacks against a sporting symbol is nothing more than mindless yobbery. The genuine protester's efforts were ruined by a bunch of Tree Hugging Yobs, which I believe reflects a lot worse on us than it does China. If you have a gripe with China, protest at their embassy or try going over there and see how that sort of behavoir goes down. They actually appreciate respectful and thoughtful suggestions, which is more than I can say for our cloth-eared government.
I worked in China for several years, met a lot of very happy people with good values regarding how to live their lives, which is more than I see in many parts of the UK - nobody over there expects a free ticket and you don't see queues of Chinese at our dole offices. Their government is no more or less dishonest than ours and they have an enormous country to grow and freedom is growing, whereas we can't even open an airport properly or kit out our troops with working equipment. I read a report in yesterday's newspapers that they execute drug dealers - fantastic, bring it on, I'll vote for that !!

Summer Flood Profits

We learnt this weekend that our wonderfully trustworthy, caring government has made a profit from the floods that ruined so many homes and businesses last summer, especially in Yorkshire, Worcestershire & Gloucestershire.

Gordon Brown belatedly released £86 million of Flood Relief funds to help these areas. In fact a good portion of that did finally come from the EU Flood Relief Fund following parties like Popular Alliance campaigning for him to use it, after he initially refused to. Unfortunately, any EU money that we got back, represented a 60% loss due to them keeping 2/3 of what we pay them every month, so perhaps if we hadn’t paid them EU £40 million each day, we could have had up to £258 million in the pot, to immediately spend on these stricken areas ? Or perhaps to have invested in better flood defences in the first place ?

It now transpires that net VAT returns on moneys spent to clear up the flood damage has topped £100 million. In fact over £500 million has been charged as VAT, but much is reclaimed by businesses, however the ABI assess Mr Darling's tax windfall at an initial £100 million. Even this is not the actual figure, as approximately one in four houses is not insured and therefore it is almost impossible to track their own expenditure.

Insurance Virtually Unobtainable

Insurers are now refusing to cover many of these homes in the future, unless local councils undertake comprehensive flood protection measures. This will in turn, lead to a massive rise in local council taxes for those already suffering massive hardship, as they try to get their lives back in order. I don’t see many Tree Huggers marching around Hull, Sheffield, Worcester & Tewkesbury demanding justice.

Popular Alliance Input

As we have said many times. We would offer a Referendum to leave the EU and would use examples like this disgrace as reasons to do so. Our country would have our own trade agreements across Europe and the world and also have a lot more money to spend on putting this country back back to where it should be.

Mock The Week Quote

BBC2's Mock The Week did actually suggest that last summer saw the first month in history that DFS furniture stores DID NOT have a sale. Its always good to see that Great British ability to rise above disaster with our humour. Perhaps we should have a Minister For Humour - then again, we already have several !!!
