Iraq Investigation

by Craig Chapman - 08:39 on 25 March 2008
There are mixed views on the justification behind the Iraq war within our party and no doubt many others, however everyone is very keen on an investigation into what we can learn from it all.
Weapons of Mass Destruction or not, the country was run by a tyrant who went around gassing his own citizens and invading nearby smaller countries to get his hands on their assets and to throw his egotistical weight around.
Personally and like many others, I believe that it was right to go there, but that a lot more thought should have been paid to the aftermath. It's easy to say that in hindsight. Tony Blair had the courage of his convictions (unlike his greasy successor) and I applaud him for that, at least.
I do believe that Saddam Hussein's government had made efforts to obtain WMD and they certainly had chemical capabilites (but how far they could send them is another question) but with the breakdown of old Russia and the many factions of infighting Muslims, it is very hard to know what and who to believe.
It is easy to throw accusations at George Bush, but it wasn't him gassing his own citizens was it ? I believe that during the haggling between the UN and USA/UK prior to the invasion, that certain countries helped in the quick removal of various WMD efforts, all keen to see the USA/UK alliance embarass themselves.
Yes, oil does play a very big part in this, or else various areas of Africa would also be full of US and UK troops, with German troops left back at camp on sandwich making duties.
So 5 years on, we still have no answers. Parts of Iraq are progressing very well (despite our media's constant reluctance to show good news stories), especially in the north where the Kurds were under constant attack from the Sunis. Isn't it ironic that we are not allowed to help one group of Muslims without worldwide condemnation, whilst another group of Muslims are permitted to gas them ??? Similarly in the Balkans, I understand that we were defending Muslims against those who claimed to be Catholics.
Perhaps we should just ban religion ?? A Man does not need faith to do good in the world and be kind to those around him.
I certainly support William Hague on this matter. We can learn from an open, honest and mature investigation and a lot of people have got to be mature enough to admit mistakes and look into how they learn from them.
The LibDems, as ever are using this and any other situation to try and enhance their reputation (chortle) as a bunch of immature, name calling fools who's entire existance slows down common sense and achievement. Imagine if they ever did get into power - they would have to immediately relinquish their position, just in case they had upset other parties by defeating them !!!
