This win, and Carloway’s 2-1 defeat by Point, means that for the third year in a row Lochs are Lewis and Harris League Champions.

The game against Aths, scheduled for Goathill, had to be moved to Garrabost due to the condition of Goathill after a day of heavy rain. Lochs started with Andy on the bench but he was called into action midway through the first half when Ally suffered a knee injury. Robert returned from holiday and appeared at half time to take over from his brother Peter at right wing back.

The early chances in the game fell to Lochs when David Martin drove wide from a Nommie cross, Peter “Robbie” hit the post from a Lava cross and Lava himself had a header cleared off the line. However, it was Aths who took the lead when Ali Walker was allowed to run at the Lochs defence before hitting a perfect drive past Houston and into the Lochs net. This lead could, and should, have been doubled by Scott Maciver but he drove the ball against the post when he was through 1 on1 against the Lochs keeper.

Aths were enjoying the better possession in the first half but Andy Murray equalized just before the break to level things. Aths had played well in the first half with Gussy commanding in defence, Ali Walker and Scott Maciver dangerous in attack and Mojo buzzing all over the park creating trouble for Lochs.

Into the second half and the tension of the match was beginning to tell. News arrived that Point were leading Carloway and that a win could give Lochs the title. However, Aths had other ideas. When Ali Walker rounded the last defender and the keeper he could have put Aths ahead, but his effort came back of the post and was cleared by Peter Mackenzie. With time moving on and the tension increasing Lochs began to press forward for the goals that would give them the title. It was fitting that the first of these was headed in by Don Lava, who is again this year’s top scorer. Then Robert fired in a third. 3-1 for Lochs and the title in sight. Scott Maciver pulled one back for Aths to make it a nervy finish but Robert Mackay’s final whistle brought relief all round for the Lochies. A 5 minute wait confirmed that Point had beaten Carloway and the title was ours.

Lochs took the field without Andy Murray (ankle injury), Don Lava (holiday), Roddy Morrison (work) and Robert Mackenzie. Andy however, was on the bench. Lochs started well with some good crisp early passing especially down their left hand side involving David Martin, Peter Mackenzie, David Macmillan and Jonathan Smith. The first chance created by such passing led to Nommie hitting a drive over the bar. David Martin then tested Wright in the Point goal with a drive that the keeper turned away for a corner. Then David Macmillan drove the ball past the keeper’s right hand post following a great cross from Peter “Robbie” on the Lochs right. However, completely against the run of play Point scored on the break when Daniel Keenan cleverly lofted the ball over Houston in the Lochs goal to give the Reds a 1-0 lead. Lochs continued to dominate and chances fell to Graeme and Nommie which were missed before a clever interchange of passes between Nommie and Jonathan led to Johnny driving the ball under keeper Wright for the Lochs equalizer.

Point then had their best period of the game in the remainder of the first half. Stuart Macpherson powered through the Lochs defence to drive home a second for Point on the 26th minute. Lochs did create chances and forced corners but could not breach the Reds defence. Andrew Murray, on the Point right flank was having a very good game and nearly added to the score with a cross come shot that went over the Lochs crossbar. With Point in the ascendancy Macpherson again found himself in space and fired into the Lochs net to make the score 3-1 to Point at the break.

The second half was dominated by Lochs and Point only managed to break out of defence on the odd occasion. Lochs reduced Point’s lead when Jonathan Smith broke through the Red’s defence and despite being pulled back managed to wriggle free and drive the ball past Wright and into the Point net. Lochs then went on to create several chances but it looked as if Point were going to hold on to their one goal lead. David Macmillan hit the post with a free kick, Peter Mackenzie drove wide of the keeper’s left hand post and Wright saved a David Martin header. Then when all seemed lost, after a scramble in the Point box, up stepped Jonathan Smith again to smash home his third and the equalizer for the Maroons. Right at the death Nommie hit the post for Lochs. That was the last action of a tempestuous 90mins.

The format of the Coop Cup competition meant that it was straight to penalties.

Every player who took part in this hard fought contest deserves praise but I don’t think the rest of the squad would object if I highlighted two youngsters for special mention, Jonathan Smith who scored all three goal, his first hat-trick for Lochs, and Cameron Houston who saved Point’s 7th penalty kick. Well done lads it was quite a night.

Lochs crashed out of the Eilean an Fhraoich Cup in dramatic fashion against West Side on Monday night. With the tie balanced at 2-2 after the first leg the sides resumed hostilities in Barvas on a dry if blustery evening. Lochs had David Black in goals but Peter Mackenzie and David Martin were both unavailable. Danny Mackenzie made his first appearance of the season at left wing back.

Lochs looked dangerous from the start and the West side defence looked troubled by any ball over the top of their central defenders. From one of these, cleverly played by Roddy Morrison, Lava blasted the ball home to give Lochs an early lead. West Side was depending on the speed of Chris Adams on the right hand side as their main attacking ploy. Several times he got free in the penalty box but his efforts were blocked by Black and the Lochs rearguard. The only other tactic West side were employing at this time was the high ball from right to left into the Lochs box but Black was able to deal with these easily.

Into the second half and the Siarachs began to up the tempo of their game. Lochs, with David Macmillan in midfield obviously not fully fit, seemed to sit back too much and invite West Side onto them. With the Siarachs in the ascendency came a turning point in the game. David Black was adjudged to have fouled a West Side forward in the box, a penalty was awarded and as he was the last man Black was sent off. Young Cameron Houston came on to face the penalty and Peter “Robbie” was sacrificed as the player who had to come off. Scott Macrury converted the spot kick to level the scores. Lochs resorted to a 3-5-1 formation with Nommie at right wing back and Lava playing as the lone striker.

Lochs took hold of the game again at this stage and from a Roddy Morrison free kick which was knocked on to the back post Lava restored Lochs’ lead. They held this lead until into injury time when Chris Adams, from a suspiciously off side position, equalized and sent the game into extra time.

During the second period of extra time Norman “Gungi” scored the winner for the West Side who now move into the final against Ness.

Lochs Win Jock Stein Cup for Sixth Time

Carloway 0 v 7 Lochs

On Friday July 17th Lochs took the field at Goathill Park, Stornoway for the final of the 2009 Jock Stein Cup against Carloway. Lochs had previously won this trophy five times, in 1995, 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2007. The torrential rain that hit Stornoway on Thursday left the grass looking lush and green as the players made their way onto the field and a sizeable crowd awaited their arrival. Despite other attractions in the town including the Celtic Festival and a circus the main event for the avid football followers was the Jock Stein Cup Final.

Lochs had expected both Graeme Mackenzie and David Black to make their way from the mainland to be part of the squad but the disruption caused to the ferry timetable by the MV Isle of Lewis breaking down in Stornoway meant that Robbie Mackenzie’s team was without these two stalwarts. However, Lochs fielded a strong side as usual despite seven of the players having played the previous Wendesday against a visiting Dundee United youth side.

Lochs created some early chances and with one of them hit the Carloway crossbar but could not find the net. Another looked as if it had crossed the line before being cleared by a Carloway defender but the referee waved play on. At the other end Crossley and Chris Macleod looked lively and Lochs keeper Cameron Houston had to look lively as he dealt with the first serious threat to his goal. The Lochs midfield began to control the game as the half wore on with Andy Murray spraying passes in all directions to willing runners. As we neared the half hour mark John “Uig” Morrison found himself in space on the Lochs right flank and from his perfectly placed cross David Macmillan headed the ball past keeper Craigie in the Carloway goal to give Lochs a deserved lead. Lochs then increased the pressure on the Carloway defence and wing back Robert Mackenzie doubled the lead when he headed home from a corner on the Lochs right. The pick of the goals was the third one scored as half time approached. Andy Murray broke free on the Lochs left and made his way unchallenged to the bye line. Instead of cutting the ball back or crossing it he went for goal himself and from the narrowest of angles beat the Carloway keeper by driving the ball high into the top of the net. Exquisite. On the stroke of half time Lochs keeper Houston pulled of a great save diving low to his right to prevent Carloway scoring.

Half – Time Carloway 0 v 3 Lochs

For the first twenty minutes of the second half Carloway enjoyed their best spell of the match. However, they did not pose any great threat to the Lochs goal.  The closest they came was when a header from Chris Macleod flashed past the post. Further goals from David Martin, two from top scorer Don “Lava” Macleod and a first goal for Lochs from young substitute Peter “Robbie” Mackenzie made it a scintillating seven for the rampant Lochies.

On the night Andy Murray was the top performer and was awarded with the sponsors Man of the Match trophy. Andy makes football look easy as he glides past opponents, sprays passes in all directions and generally controls movement around him. Carloway never closed him down and so he was able to dictate play all night. At the back Alex Maciver, Ali Mackenzie and Peter Mackenzie were solid and young keeper Cameron Houston is gaining in confidence as the season progresses. Add to that mix the guile, control and trickery of Donald “Nommie” Macdonald and on the night Lochs were the complete package.

Special congratulations to Manager Robbie Mackenzie who guided his side to his first trophy in charge of Lochs. He has used his squad well so far this season and despite setbacks in the Acres Cup and the Highland Amateur Cup they came good tonight when it mattered. Well done Robbie.

This was also Niall Gibson’s last game for Lochs before he leaves the island and heads of to Egypt to take up a new job there.

Lochs, four up from the first leg, expected quite a battle at Rally Park against Harris in the return leg but it did not materialize. Lochs took control early on and never really let Harris into the game. Harris seemed a much tamer side then we have seen recently and that may have had something to do with the referee Angus Morrison who stamped down on any over zealous tackles by the Hearachs. It was good to see yound Ali Macdonald who came on a substitute scoring his second senior goal for the Lochies. Well done Ali.

If Lochs do go on to win the League title this season they will look back on this win as possibly the most crucial. Robbie had seven players (Andy, Niall, Danny, Graeme, Peter, Robert and Tippex) all unavailable for one reason or another. However Black was in goals and Stoon was at home on holiday and so available in defence. To add to this Point fielded a much stronger team than they normally had this season. Point have been playing a lot of youngsters all season put tonight they had Cally and Kai Mackay available along with George Smith and Innes Fushie who all added considerable strength to the side.

The first half was fairly even with Lochs having a lot of the ball but Point very dangerous on the break. Into the second half and Lochs began to step up the tempo of the game. Alex Wright produced three excellent saves to deny Lochs and David Martin hit the post and the bar as Lochs pushed forward. However, it was an error that gave Lochs the lead. In trying to clear the ball Innes Fushie sliced the ball over his own keeper and into the net. Relief in the Lochs ranks. This did not last for long. A mix up in the Lochs defence allowed Point to equalize with about ten minutes to go and a draw was on the cards again. It took one moment of brilliance to win all three points for Lochs. David Macmillan was forced wide right with the ball, at one stage having to pick himself up of the ground to regain possession, he cut back in towards the Point goal and from the edge of the box lifted a clever lob over the defence and the keeper before it dipped into the net in the top left hand corner. A goal worthy of winning any match. Lochs held that lead and so the three vital points.

Wick Groats end Highland Amateur Dream for Lochies

Lochs and Wick Groats met at Culbokie on Saturday 20th June in the 3rd Round of this years Highland Amateur Cup. Lochs took the field without Andy Murray but with Graeme Mackenzie available from the bench. It was Groats who started brighter forcing an early corner which Lochs cleared and turned into a breakaway themselves from which David Martin had their first opportunity but could not find the target. Ten minutes into the game and Groats were awarded a soft free kick outside the Lochs penalty box. However, there was nothing soft about the way in which it was taken as Stewert Ross lashed the ball into the Lochs net leaving keeper Black in the Lochs goal stranded to give the Wick side a 1-0 lead. Another similar opportunity was presented to the Wick side minutes later but this free kick was deflected and saved by David Black. Lochs began to come more into the game after about 20mins and following good work by Don “Lava” Macleod and “Nommie” Macdonald Robert Mackenzie had his shot well saved. Then from a corner a “Lava” header was easily held by Williamson in the Groats goal.

As the half progressed Greig Shearer and Shaun Stewart were beginning to shine in a good Groats side that tackled furiously but fairly, passed the ball well and utilized space to good effect. Shearer in particular was a handful with his pacy, strong running and excellent use of the ball.

Lochs did however have chances. A David Macmillan free kick was tipped over the bar for a corner and another “Lava” header was saved by the Wick keeper. As half time neared “Nommie” carved open the Wick defence but there was nobody in the box to meet his crossball.

Half Time Wick Groats 1 v 0 Lochs

Lochs began the second half strongly and created a series of chances. Lava saw a hook shot go wide of the post, Niall Gibson fired a strong free kick into the Groats defensive wall and Gibson shot wide following a quick 1-2 interchange with Nommie. David martin saw a header saved at the back post as was the resulting rebound. No matter what Lochs threw at them in the second half the Groats defence stood firm. They then survived a series of corner kicks and showed that they could play a bit themselves when they broke out of defence and Martin Sutherland fired a low drive into the Lochs net to make the score 2-0 for Wick Groats. Despite a late Don “Lava” Macleod headed goal Wick Groats held on to advance to the quarter finals where they will play the winner of the Back-Aths tie.

Lochs took on United on a bright, sunny if cold evening in this League match at Goathill. John “Uig” was rested as he had a sore ankle and Roddy Morrison was away on the mainland completing a training course. The team still had a very familiar look, but Robert replaced John “Uig” in central midfield.

As they had done recently in the HAC United started brightly and passed the ball about well. However, the first clear cut chance fell to Lochs when a low drive from David Martin was saved by Martin Macphee in the United goal. Niall Gibson then drove the ball over the bar before the first highlight of the game saw Macphee in the United goal save spectacularly from Robert Mackenzie. From the resulting corner Lochs took the lead when Alex “Tippex” lashed the ball into the net after United failed to clear.

Niall Gibson was playing well on the right flank and was dispossessed after a clever run into the United box. Macphee was again called into action when he tipped a shot from Alex “Tippex” over the bar. Lochs increased their lead when David Macmillan drove the ball home after the ball fell kindly for him from a free kick. Lochs were totally dominant at this point and Andy and Niall combined well with a clever interchange of passes but United cleared the ball away for a corner. United’s best chance of the first half resulted in a shot that went just wide of the post. At the other end Nommie playeda great lay off to Tippex who’s shot was fired wide of the goal. Lochs made it 3-0 before half time when David Martin scored with a cheeky back heeler after Andy had twice been thwarted by Macphee in the United goal.

HT 3-0

Lava headed home from a David Macmillan corner to make it 4-0. A Lochs break led to a cross from Lava which first David Macmillan and then Nommie tried to convert but the United keeper foiled their chances. United scored at this point to make it 4-1 but further goals from Lava and Andy completed the scoring for Lochs. Another comprehensive victory for Lochs who have now scored 37 goals in their last 5 games with Lava scoring 17 of these.

On an incredibly cold night at Sgoil nan Loch Lochs ran out comfortable 9-0 winners against Carloway. The game was dominated by a bitingly cold wind blowing the length of the pitch from the school end. Midway through the first half we were blessed with a sleety/rain downpour to complete the misery of the night. However, there was no misery on the field of play. Lochs, playing into the wind in the first half, totally dominated play. Lava continued where he left off on Monday night by scoring the first two goals taking his total to 18 for the season and 15 in the last four games. David Martin scored one in the first half and two more in the second for what might be his first senior hat-trick for Lochs (?) David Macmillan and Nommie each got one and Robert, who came on as a second half substitute, smashed home two.

Overall their play was excellent. The quick interchange of passes had Carloway floundering. Nommie is back to his best terrorizing defences with his darting forward runs and coming off his markers and leaving them confused in his wake. David Mac, Andy, John, David Martin combined with Nommie to take the Carloway defence apart time after time. The only weakness is in defence. I would not like to see them play against one or two pacy strikers.

Don “Lava” Macleod continued on his goalscoring rampage tonight netting five times and bring his total for the season to 16. Of these, 13 have been scored in the last three games. He dominated the early play scoring three times before Andy and David Martin completed the first half scoring. Lochs were totally dominant limiting Aths to just the occasional breakaway. At times their interchange of passes was sublime with Nommie playing as pivotal role. Over the last few games he has been tremendous. His ability to move off defenders, hold up the ball and link with his teammates is exquisite.  No matter how or where the ball is played to him he is able to control it and bring others into the game. What a difference this man makes to the team.

Lava was rampant scoring five times. This is only the seventh time in club history that a player has scored five or more goals in one game. Lava has netted 5 four times the only others to do it are present manager Robbie Mackenzie (5) and Chuck Macleod who twice scored 7 times in the one game. This has been quite a week for Lava not only has he got 13 goals in the last three games he also scored his 300th Lochs goal and his total now stands at 308.

Andy, David Mac, John, David Martin and Niall controlled the midfield with their one touch passing a delight to watch. A Lochs played on the ball just now has got so many options in terms of passes that he is spoilt for choice. The defence was solid with Alex, Ali and Peter rarely putting a foot wrong. Young Cameron Houston in goals is gaining in confidence as the season progresses. Tonight he handled confidently and he has certainly got the support of the crowd behind him with his every touch. Well done Cameron.

A beautiful evening in Garrabost saw United and Lochs compete in this HAC Round 2 match. United wanted the game moved from Saturday to the Friday and as Goathill was being played on the game was played in Garrabost. With several of their students back at home United fielded a strong side and started the game briskly. They dominated possession for the first ten or so minutes and played a confident passing game which posed problems for the Lochs defence.

However, it was Lochs who took the lead with a rather unusual goal from Niall Gibson. Picking up the ball wide on the right flank Niall floated a shot come cross into the united goalmouth. With the United keeper MacPhee near the centre of the goalmouth Gibson’s cross glanced off the near post and drifted into the net at the back post. Was it a cross? Was it an attempt at goal? Hard to say. The keeper seemed rooted to the goalline. Niall has scored from similar positions and so it is not inconceivable that he tried to score. Minutes later Lochs doubled their lead when David Macmillan scored and by now United were rattled.

Then came a moment to savor. Don “Lava” Macleod scored Lochs’ third of the night and his 300th senior goal in Lochs colours. Quite an achievement for the big striker who has terrorized defences for the last ten years. The same played made it 4-0 before half time and Lochs were all but through to the third round.

HT 4-0

Playing into a dazzling sun Lochs continued to take the game to United in the second half and doubled their goal tally with another four, Roddy, David Mac. And Lava (2) completed the scoring. United did get one consolation goal through Ian Maclennan but Lochs were deserved winners. They played some fantastic football and everyone who played deserves praise for this display. They retained possession well, penetrated the United rearguard at will used the full width of the field and scored eight excellent goals.

Lochs picked up three vital points tonight in a convincing 7-0 win over Ness at Sgoil nan Loch. They played a very fluid passing game from start to finish and did not allow Ness to get into the game at any time in the 90minutes. With Niall Gibson at right wing back and David Martin back at left wing back Lochs had width and pace down the flanks which troubled Ness from the kick off. David Macmillan was back in midfield after missing a couple of games and teamed up with Andy Murray and John “Uig” Morrison to supply the wing backs and strikers with a host of opportunities to score. Robert, Ali and Peter Mackenzie were solid in defence and rampaged forward as often as possible to add their weight to the attack. Don “Lava” as usual chased and harried defenders all night and never gave them a moments peace on the ball. His strike partner Roddy Morrison was his usual tenacious self and capped another excellent performance with two goals.

The pick of the goals came in the second half from Niall Gibson. He drove a free kick from about 20-25 metres into the net beating the keeper at his near post. Niall added this goal to Lochs’ first which he scored in the 4th minute to give Lochs the lead.

Altogether a good performance from Lochs their best of the season so far.

On a cold and blustery Saturday morning North Uist United visited Sgoil nan Loch having made the early morning crossing from Berneray to Harris for the match. North Uist came having won their first two games in the Uist and Barra League and currently sit top of the table. Lochs manager Robbie Mackenzie was forced to make some changes to his side due to absence and injury. Niall Gibson, David Martin, David Macmillan and Donald “Nommie” Macdonald were all unavailable and so the team that started included a sprinkling of young junior players. Jonathan Smith started in attack and Christie Campbell and Ali Macdonald began in the wing back positions. On the plus side David Black was back in goals, allowing Christie to play outfield. On the bench Lochs had three more youngsters Cameron Houston, Gordon Maciver and Peter “Robbie” Mackenzie.

The changes in personnel did not influence Lochs’ style of play in the slightest. They began from the first whistle to dominate the play with their usual passing style and soon had North Uist on the back foot. The first chance fell to Roddy Morrison whose drive whistled wide of the keeper’s right hand post. Lochs were utilising the right hand side of the field to good effect with Christie Campbell, Roddy Morrison and Robert Mackenzie supplying a series of good crosses into the box. From one of these Don “Lava” Macleod headed narrowly past the post.

In their first serious attack North Uist carved out a good chance with a cross to the back post being headed tamely towards the Lochs goal only for David Black to save easily.

Lochs continued to make good use of the ball from the right side and from a Robert Mackenzie cross Don “Lava” Macleod came closest to scoring when he headed the ball against the post. The other dominant feature of the game at this stage was the influence Andy Murray and John “Uig” Morrison were having in the middle of the field. They used their passing abilities and their experience to control play and allow other players to run off them and take up good positions to receive their passes. At other times the two of them combined to cut through the North Uist defence and try for goal themselves. It was from one of these passages of play that Lochs took the lead when John and Andy combined to pass their way through the opponents defence before Andy rounded the keeper to slot the ball home. One other opportunity in the first half saw a Don “Lava” effort cleared off the line after he was set up by a clever interchange of passes by Robert Mackenzie and Jonathan Smith.

Into the second half and play continued to flow towards the North Uist goal. Six minutes into the half and Lochs doubled their lead. From an Andy Murray free kick Don “Lava” Macleod headed the ball into the net. Two good chances were passed up by Lochs shortly afterwards. Firstly Don “Lava” smashed the ball over the bar after being set up by clever play from Jonathan Smith and then Roddy Morrison scooped an Andy Murray cross over the bar from close range. Roddy Morrison did score to make it three after more clever footwork from Jonathan Smith and the Lochs scoring was rounded off by Andy Murray when he curled a left foot drive round the keeper and into the bottom left hand corner of the net from about 20metres.

Andy Murray was then replaced by the diminutive Gordon Maciver from Laxay (son of former Lochs stalwart Iain “Lachie” Maciver). Also Cameron Houston came on to replace David Black in the Lochs goal for the final ten minutes.

In the closing minutes of the game North Uist got a consolation goal when Cailean Macquarrie fired home from close range. This was nothing more than the team’s all round effort deserved. They chased and harried Lochs for the whole game and never missed any opportunity to break forward. We wish them well in their League campaign this season.

Lochs Win Through to Acres Cup Final
Lochs began this game as they began the previous one against Ness. They dominated possession and were the better team. This time unlike the Ness game they had two goals to show for it. First Niall Gibson slammed the ball home on 28mins and then on 35mins Jonathan Smith made it 2-0 with a low drive past the keeper. Lochs had several other chances in the first half with Macritchie in the Aths goal saving well from Roddy Morrison and then near half time from Jonathan Smith. Then on the stroke of half time Scott Maciver broke free from the shackles put on him by Ali Mackenzie and with Aths’ first effort on target in the first half cut Lochs’ lead to 2-1. That was the score at the break.

The first chance of the second half fell to Jonathan Smith who drove the ball wide of the post. Aths then equalized when Gary Macleod volleyed the ball into the Lochs net. On the 55th minute disaster struck for Aths defender Stevie Clinton when he scooped the ball into his own net under pressure from Don “Lava” Macleod. The game was evenly balanced after that goal with chances falling at both ends. Roddy Morrison shot over the bar when he was put clear by David Macmillan, Lava headed wide of the post and Jonathan Smith brought a good save from keeper Macritchie when he was put through again by David Macmillan. Aths best chance saw the ball trickle agonizingly along the goal line witht the black and whites claiming a goal.

So Lochs have made it to the final of the Acres Boys Club Cup which is due to be played on Friday 15th May.

Football is indeed a strange and unpredictable game as the first half of this Acres Boys Club Cup game at Fivepenny, Ness proved. Lochs, having played their best passing football of the season so far, having had ten efforts on target, having hit the crossbar and had another effort smothered by the Ness keeper on the line, having forced ten corners and having seen several other efforts go wide of the target, went in at half time 1-0 down to a poor Ness side. Football is however about scoring goals and the Niseachs scored one of only two shots on target in the first half.

Into the second half and an early goal from Roddy Morrison should have settled Lochs down. Instead in spurred Ness on to play some of their better football of the game. They came closer to scoring when a right footed drive from the right side of the box narrowly missed the target. Ness were dangerous on the break and again could have scored when a header was sent just past the Lochs keeper’s left hand post.

Lochs did stamp their authority on the game and had most of the possession but the closest they came to scoring was when an Andy Murray effort came back of the post. The game appeared to be heading to extra-time when Lochs were awarded a free kick outside the Ness box. Quick thinking by David Macmillan saw him pass the ball to an unmarked Robert Mackenzie on the left side of the Ness penalty box. Robert, in a good deal of space, smashed the ball into the net to secure a semi-final spot for the Lochies.

A fine if cold night in Carloway brought out a large crowd to see what promised to be an entertaining match. With Niall Gibson away on the mainland Alex “Tippex” Maciver deputized in defence for Lochs and David Black made his first start of the season in goals. Otherwise the Lochs team was unchanged from the side that defeated West Side last week.

Both sides started brightly and the first Lochs chance fell to David Martin who drove his shot wide of the keeper’s left hand post. Carloway were unlucky not to take the lead in 12mins when first Black made a good save and from the resulting clearance a clever drive hit the frame of the Lochs goal. The class act on the field in the first period was Andy Murray of Lochs and it was fitting that it was his clever dribble to the Carloway goal line and subsequent cut back that left Roddy Morrison with the simple task of side footing the ball home to give Lochs the lead.

This produced a good response from Carloway and they had one of their best spells of the match culminating in Alex Smith firing home a spectacular equalizer on the 25th minute. Another excellent run from Andy Murray ended with a pass to David Martin whose drive put Lochs back in front on the half hour. Then on the stroke of half time David Macmillan supplied the back post cross which Peter Mackenzie headed home to give Lochs a deserved 3-1 interval lead.

The second half did not produce any more goals and the football was not as entertaining as in the first period. Highlights of the period was a John “Uig” rocket which crashed off the crossbar and a flashing drive from Carloway which went wide of Black’s right hand post.

A good game in which Lochs deserved the points but Carloway again showed that their young team is continuing to make progress.

On a cold and windy Friday night a good sized crowd, swelled by players and supporters from Aths, Carloway and Back, gathered at Sgoil nan Loch for the opening match of the season at home to West Side. They witnessed a hard fought, competitive match which West Side, despite having lost some of their squad from last season, kept alive right to the final whistle. Lochs took the lead through Don “Lava” Macleod midway through the first half but just before half time Dan Macphail equalized for West Side. With the wind behind them in the second period Lochs dominated possession but West Side were very dangerous on the break. Only in flashes did Lochs show their true passing game. One of these occasions produced a fluid passing move which ended in Don “Lava” Macleod heading narrowly wide. The winning goal, when it came, was a clever piece of invention from the two class acts on the pitch David Macmillan and Andy Murray. Lochs were awarded a free kick just outside the West Side penalty box. With everyone waiting for David to attempts to beat the defensive wall he passed the ball to the unmarked Andy Murray who calmly drove it into the net to secure the victory. Further chances were missed by Lochs and at the final whistle the side was relieved to pick up all three points to give new manager Robbie Mackenzie his first victory.
